My wife and I will be in SF in mid-October for 3 nights, staying at Tuscan Inn. I was thinking of renting a car so we could explore the city. I've heard of a scenic drive through all parts of the city that takes maybe half a day. Plus I figured round-trip SFO transfers (maybe $60 each) would be about equal to 3 nights of parking at hotel plus parking here and there. I think the Tuscan Inn charges about $25/night. After SF we are driving to Monterey and then on to Napa (10 days total). Should I rent the car or not? Any thoughts?

I would rent a car. It is much more convenient than cabs and public transporation. Public transportation is unreliable and dirty. Lots of the homeless that you see in SF ride the busses and light rail. Cabs are hard to come by. You can't hail a cabb in SF as yu would in NYC. if you call for one, it could be a half hour before they pick you up.

I previously researched my accomodations & parking options before going to San Francisco because we needed a rental car to travel to wine country, down the Pacific Coast highway, & to Yosemite. We were able to find a B&B near Alamo Square & park nearby in a church parking lot for $10.00/day. This worked out very well, otherwise I would not have gotten a rental car.

Rent the car--something in a mini-van or XL SUV. If you're going to drive through downtown, you'll be glad to be fortified when cruising the hills.
