san francisco music clubs

My husband and I are going to be in San Francisco over the weekend of Feb. 15th-17th. We are interested in going to some jazz clubs or lounges. Bruno's looks interesting. Has anyone been there? We are in our early 50's and our 24 year old son and his girlfriend will be with us. Thanks!

My 25-year-old son goes to clubs in Berkeley, check them out, it's a university city and maybe more activity there. It's an easy BART ride from SF.

Go to www.sfgate.com for information about what's on in SF clubs.

Although I live in the city, my favorite jazz club is out in Oakland. It's only about 20 minutes away over the Bay Bridge (without traffic). The place is called Yoshi's and I have to say that they book only top notch performers there. They're website yoshis.com will provide you with a list of who's playing the weekend you'll be here. I usually go about once a month, sometimes with very little knowledge of the performer, but i've never left disappointed.

I've been to Bruno's but a long time ago. It's a very casual place -- I don't even think they have tables. As I recall, it was more of just a bar with a stage.

Rassela's jazz club, located near California and Divisadero I think, is interesting.

The other poster's suggestion of Yoshi's is a great one. Very upscale with a great sushi restaurant attached to it. It's located in Jack London Square in Oakland so you might be able to take a boat from SF to Oakland, depending on time. Check www.blueandgoldfleet.com for schedules.

If you like blues, try "Biscuits 'n' Blues" near Union Square (more formal, sitdown place) or "The Boom Boom Room," John Lee Hooker's place at Fillmore and Geary (casual, dance floor). Both have excellent lineups usually 7 nights per week.

Have fun!
