San Francisco Hotels

A girlfriend and I need a hotel in the Union Sq area for 2 nights, Nov 1 & 2. We want the hotel to be clean, comfortable, and safe. We'd like to spend between $99-135.00 if possible. Any advice would be good. She found the Hilton at Union Sq in that price range, so any comments on that would be much appreciated.

Hi tinydancer. The Hilton would fit your description. When you leave the hotel turn right which will take you to Powell/Union Sqaure. Turning left when leaving the Hilton will take you into the Tenderloin which you probably don't want to do.

You could also look at the Chancellor Hotel. They are having specials Nov - April. Your room could be $89 or for $99 you could get a room and $25 food & beverage credit.

It's right on Powell between Post & Sutter.

I will offer up my favorite, The Mosser. Just off Market St and Union Sq. Clean, simple, but small rooms. They have rooms with private bath or you can have hall bath for shower. They are very clean and easy to use [the room has it's own little sink and commode, I think].

I just checked at The Mosser, 2 twin beds, private bath for $89 a night. ["last minute special"] They offer muffins and coffee in the morning.

I've stayed twice at www.andrewshotel.com which fits your description for location and price range and safety.

I would not recommend The Andrews. We stayed there once and were miserable. The room and bathroom were very tiny. The elevator never worked so we had to climb 3 flights to our room and then walk back down again. I think I'd stay anywhere but there.

Would you be comfortable using Hotwire - I don't think you can go wrong with 4-1/2* hotel (likely the Intercontinental) for $137 a night in the Union Square East area. There's also a 3-1/2* for $95 that's likely the Galleria Park. Both would be good choices. There are others in other areas, too.

sunshine, Thanks for posting your differing experience. As I mentioned, I've only had good stays there. Plus sent a coworker as recently as a month ago who thought it was great too. Yes I agree the rooms and bathrooms are small, it's a historic hotel (old building). The elevator worked during my stay. Staff was helpful. I enjoyed the free continental breakfast laid out on each flood in the mornings.

It is now after our visit to SF. We stayed in the Hilton near Union Sq. After my friend couldn't get what was offered on the internet she called the hotel directly and they made good on the offer. They gave us a double/double with a view on the 38th floor for $99. Great hotel, great location! Right near Union Sq so easy to shop and hang out and take the cable car down to the warf. Highly recommend this hotel, we'll stay there next time in SF.

There is another post asking about SF hotels FYI. Since is has been 4 years, you'll need to check about $. Here is what I posted there:

We were in SF in Sept. 2005 and stayed at the Rex and loved it. Our room was small but beautiful. There was a hotel bar and a place where authors actually did book readings/signings. We loved it.

Just a couple of blocks from Union Square and there were wonderful breakfast places both up and down the streets. Convenient to a cable line also.

Have a great time!
