Will be in SF in May and thinking of staying at the Washington Square Inn in the north beach area. Has anyone stayed there? Comments please. Other hotel suggestions would be welcomed. Thanks.

It is a nice area with all the Italian restaurants around! It is also quite close to Fisherman’s Wharf.
I think hotels near Union Square would be a good location also- close to many shops and restaurants, and more important, close to all sorts of transportations.
Remember to bring a jacket/ coat! It can always get chilly with the wind! Have a good trip!

Does anyone know anything about the Courtyard @ Fish. Wharf in San Francisco?
Is it safe, convienient, etc... ?

Courtyard @ Wharf is a hotel- right at the Wharf, which you have to expect to be quite touristy. There are buses and street car running through the Wharf, so it is pretty convenient.
Definitely bring a jacket! The Wharf can get quite windy at times!

I stayed recently at the Triton near Union Square (it's actually right by the Chinatown gateway arch). Wonderful boutique hotel with a friendly staff, funky/artsy but comfortable room and unlike many boutique hotels, adequate space in the room and a very welll designed bath. Fantastic bed with first rate linens. I got it on priceline but would stay there again at a higher price. Internet prices for the wekeend I was there were stating at $109 and the hotel's website was at $129 per night. Can't say enough good things about this hotel - really great.

My husband and i stayed at the Washington Square Inn in 1998 and liked it very much. I think we stayed in the tiniest room they had, but we liked the atmosphere, friendly, helpful staff, nice little breakfast, wine and cheese served in the evening, cookies in afternoon. The place is clean and nicely decorated. Moose's restaurant, which is nice, is right next door, and Mario's Bohemian (great foccacia sandwiches for lunch!) is nearby. Washington Square is a pretty little green space fronting a beautiful church--in the morning the square is full of elderly Chinese practicing their Tai Chai. I found the neighborhood convenient--anywhere you want to go is within walking distance or short bus or cable car ride. I think you would be very happy at the Washington Square Inn if you enjoy a B & B atmosphere.

Another nice, inexpensive hotel in the North beach area is the San Remo. Very European/victorian with lots of plants, polished wood and brass everywhere, small but comfortable rooms.

I love the San Remo for budget minded guests, but be aware that you'll have shared (but immaculate) bathrooms and no TVs. Another similar hotel to the Washington Square Inn is Marina Inn. North Beach is my favorite part of San Francisco with the beautiful Italian church and little restaurants. We've walked by Washington Square Inn many times on the way to Moose's. It looks delightful. Washington Square is a particularly pleasant little park where kids play and people sit on benches. You are an easy walk to Beach Blanket Babylon at Club Fugazi. If you wanted really funky in North Beach with reminders of the Beats, the Hotel Boheme is interesting.
The Juliana is a "European style" hotel over on Bush Street near Union Square. Others similar in that area are Villa Florence, Petite Auberge and the White Swan. Lots of info at www.sfvisitor.org or www.sfgate.com

Elaine,I stayed at the Monticell Inn a few years ago.It was very nice but the rooms are very small.I paid $250 a night for a Suite and ended up in a room no larger than a regular size hotel room....from what I've read that's the norm.Otherwise,it's a great place t stay in a great location too.
