San Francisco hotels

Hello. We (my wife and I, both in early 30s)are staying in San Francisco in mid-December and would like to stay downtown near the Union Sq area. It seems that there are way too many good hotels to choose from, but can anyone make recommendations between (1) The White Swan, (2) The Maxwell, (3) Villa Florence, and (4) Hotel Vintage Court? We are looking for something moderately priced (~ $150-200/night) with a good location (we will not have a car) and nice atmosphere. Thanks!

paulg, IMHO I like Villa Florence, Fantastic location, nice hotel staff and Kuleto's restaurant that is attached is wonderful for breakfast, a drink, and dinner is not my #1 spot (but always very enjoyable). Complimentary wine is served around 5:00 or 6:00pm in the beautiful lobby if you wish to partake.

Whereever you stay, have a beautiful visit!

Just had a very nice stay at the Adagio on Geary. Great small hotel with a wonderful staff.

I stayed at the White Swan a few years ago and really liked it. We had a large room with a sofa and large window. A nice breakfast room was located there also.
The street it was on off the beaten track a bit-not too far, but I was a bit uneasy walking there myself a few times. It wouldn't keep me from staying there though- I really liked everything else about it. I'll check back to see if you have any specific questions.

Thanks to all three of you for the information. It is clearly going to be a tough decision since there seem to be so many places that people enjoy ... but I guess that's not a bad problem to have. Any idea how far these places are from cable car stops? that's going to be a big plus. Thanks.

paulg, The Villa Florence is on Powell St., one half block south of Union Square. Powell St. cable car is right there. Union Sq. is beautiful at Christmas time. And of course all the wonderful stores.

Whereever you stay have a beautiful trip.

The Monaco is my fave...probably the prettiest restaurant room in town is the Grand Cafe next to the main lobby. Plus, a Kimpton Hotel...emphasis on service....they have a wine reception daily, etc
