I am not sure where we are staying as of yet. DH will be going to Convention Center. The conference provided list of over 100 hotels!
What area would be convenient for us to stay in: one that would be easy access to convention center for DH and one that would enable me to easily get to major sites. I haven't been to SF in 35 years. We won't have car, so I will need to rely on public transportation.

If you are talking about Moscone Convention Center, then the best hotel would be the San Francisco Marriott on Fourth Street. It is across the street from the Convention Center. Nice hotel.
Welcome! And looking forward to meeting you, Debit!

Practically any area of SF has convenient public transportation.
Take Civic Center off your list - not safe. Some Union square hotels not safe.
Marriott is convenient for you husband, and probably for you. Maybe several blocks to the bus (or 2 buses) if you want to go to the Legion of Honor, other destinations 1 bus or a short stroll.

Some Union square hotels not safe
This is true, since one side of Union Square borders on a not-so-great neighborhood, but it's also true that many Union Square hotels ARE safe, so if that's where you decide to stay, let us know the choices and we can [collectively] tell you which are ok and which are not.

Yes, we are paying for room. I checked out the Marriott on 4th and there is no availability. I think that this is going to be the case in the area around convention center as the organization has probably got tons of rooms in lots of hotels blocked. I was hoping to do better than the offered rates, but don't think I will be able to do so.
$250 - $300 range is about where I'd like to be on a room.

I went over the list of hotels and came up with these as possibilities:
Under $200:
Beresford Arms Hotel
Best Western Americania
Cartwright Hotel
Chancellor Hotel on Union Square
Hotel Britton
Hotel Metropolis
Hotel Rex
Hotel Vintage Court
King George Hotel
Miyako Hotel
Pickwick Hotel
Powell Hotel
$200 - 300:
Crowne Plaza Union Square
Fairmont Hotel
Galleria Park Hotel
Grand Hyatt San Francisco
Handlery Union Square Hotel
Hilton San Francisco
Hotel Monaco
Hotel Nikko
Hotel Palomar
Warwick Regis Hotel
W San Francisco
Westin San Francisco Market Street
Westin St. Francis
Hotel Union Square
Hyatt Regency San Francisco
Kensington Park Hotel
Le Meridien San Francisco
Marriott Courtyard San Francisco
Maxwell Hotel
Omni San Francisco Hotel
Palace Hotel
San Francisco Marriott
I can't book anything yet as I am guessing I need some kind of promo code and don't have it [think it will be sent in October].
Are any of these a definite no-no?
I picked places that seemed to be within walking distance to convention center.
We also don't get to register until after regular members do, so I may not be able to be picky.
Thanks!

Is Cartwright opened? It was closed for remodeling or to sell or something... In any case, not convenient to Moscone
Fairmont is on a steep hill, don't know if you both have healthy knees
Omni - I work a block away. We can have GTGs 3 times a day
May be not convenient to Moscone, will need a bus a couple of blocks away
I am not sure where the other hotels are. Rex gets rave reviews on Fodor's.
