San Francisco for 1 Month

My daughter is going to San Francisco for a month in July to study at one of the dance companies. She is 16 and I am trying to find a safe place for her to stay. There is another girl about her age that could be a roommate. I have heard there are residence inns one on 18th and Sacramento and one on 15th and Sutter. Does anyone know the area? She would need some kind of public transportation to the Market and 7th Street area. Any help very appreciated

Cheryl,
I am most happy to help you find a safe area for your daughter (you can search for my past posts to see that I am a local and a regular poster and am sincere in my efforts to help. This must be somewhat stressful to hunt for a safe place for your 16 year old).

Unfortunately, Sacramento does not intersect with 18th, nor does Sutter intersect with 15th. Are you sure of those locations?

For sure, you will not want her staying near Market and 7th, but there is ample public transportation to safely get her to and from there.

I will look for your response to see if I can be of more help.

Hi !
I'm a native and I looked up boarding houses in the phone book for you. Try this one www.meinn.org Its called the Mary Elizabeth Inn. Don't know a thing about it but her ad is nice and it appears clean and safe.

I had a friend who lived at a residence inn years ago and it was full of hookers and sketchy people.

Sharon is right, the intersections you mention don't exist.

7th and Market where her school is located is a sketchy area too, but day time hours she'll be fine.

Don't even be concerned with her inn or hotel being near public transist - it will be no matter she ends up.

Book something NOW. its hard to get a room here in the summer.

Go to this very useful website and check postings for roooms for rent or make your own posting

I find all sorts of good things on this website.

Does the dance company have lists of families she can stay with? If not, there is also a very nice long term suite apartment located at Pine and Powell Street called the Pierre Suites. They are lovely furnished apartments with a person at the front desk and secured front door. The cable car goes right past it but it is in a residential area of Nob Hill. How difficult to send her on her own for a month!

I just checked with a friend in SF about the Mary Elizabeth Inn and she told me that they accept single women 18 and over...it's at 1040 Bush Avenue and they serve breakfast and dinner everyday except Sunday...she said several years ago it was a place where women in transition went to live...(divorced, abused, etc.)...maybe you could look into area colleges which may rent their dorm space during the summer...some do.

Thanks's for the info. The addresses of the residence inn's I was referred to were at 1570 Sutter Street and at 1870 Sacramento. I will check the Pierre Suites and appreciate that suggestion. The dance school MAY have somone for my daughter to stay with but until that is locked I am still looking. Thank you so much for any help.

There is a youth hostel located in Fort Mason that may allow long-term accommodation. It would be a beautiful location for her because it's right overlooking the water (just west of Ghirardelli Square). Fort Mason is also part of the national park so it's a safe neighborhood. There are lots of bus lines that go within a block or two of the hostel.

Also, a few years ago I learned of a place called "Baker Acres" that's in Pacific Heights that I think is designed for people staying for a few weeks. I don't know much about it but its phone number is 415-921-3088. Perhaps they have a website too.

You definitely don't want her staying anywhere south of Market or anywhere near the Tenderloin.

Good luck!

Cheryl,
The 1870 Sacramento location is fine. The intersection is a bit busy, but the location is safe - it is very near Pacific Heights which is mostly residential. The Sutter address is equally desirable - closer to Japan town and the Fillmore district. Of note, they are both near a beautiful park - Lafayette Park at the top of Pacific Heights. Ample public transportation is available to take her to and from the dance company.

I hope this helps.

Sharon
