San Francisco - Excellent dining in or very near a top notch hotel?

Looking for a combo of a romantic/fine dining experience either within or very near a nice hotel. I am totally open to all and any ideas. This is for a special surprise evening, so high on the romance meter for both hotel and restaurant would be great. The only thing I can think of is the Hotel Palomar/Fifth Floor combo.
Thanks!
-Bill

Do you specifically not want to do Fifth Floor? I don't know if it gets better than that--goooood food!

Does it have to be IN the hotel?

kikahead,
No, it does not need to be in the hotel, but close by would be good. Thanks! Any ideas?

How about Francis Ford Coppola's restaurant-Cafe Niebaum-Coppola on Kearny St., just before the famous City Lights bookstore, Chinatown, and North Beach? Great Italian food-Francis Ford works on a particular recipe that he features for a few months, then, something different-but always paired with his excellent Diamond Reserve red wine.

Who knows? You might be like Spygirl-and have the great director himself come over to your table, talk to you, and then, well, he gave me something-which I still have-but that's a story for amongst friends! Suffice to say I'll never forget it, and the waiters were astonished as well-told me they'd never seen that before!

After dinner you might enjoy going dancing at the Starlight Roof of the Sir Francis Drake Hotel.

It's actually the Starlight Room-and it's one of my very favorite venues in one of my very favorite towns. Try to go there for Happy Hour on Friday nights-great crowd, sophisticated, friendly, EXCELLENT martinis-and that view! (gee, it makes me want to be there now!)

To be absolutely, precisely exact, it's Harry Denton's Starlight Room.

iamq,
If you are mobile and in reasonable "shape", I would suggest the lovely Stanford Court Hot @ CA and Powell - very well located and often a bargain. "Easy" walks to lots of great Rest.
The Powell and CA CCs stop there also.

If you do decide on the Fifth Floor - request table 1 or 2 when you make your reservations. They are situated to the left of the entrance with secluded little drapes that can be pulled closed a bit by your waiter.

It will make you feel as if you're having a very private dining experience. It's much better than the tables that sit out in the middle of the room.

Very romantic!

And what about the Carnelian Room on the 52nd floor of the B of A Bldg, corner of Cal. and Kearny St. The view from this restaurant is stupendous-both for drinks and also for dining. They actually have their own website, where you can see what the dining room looks like, but it does not convey that view-you feel like you're up in the clouds!

Thanks for all the ideas! I've decided on the Ritz Carlton and La Folie.

I'm facing a similar question (see my thread on my wife's birthday), and wonder how you selected these two.

I've been leaning towards Fleur de Lys over the Ritz Carlton, primarily because we liked FdL when we were in SF five years ago. I haven't seem much on RC since the chef moved from Masa a few months ago, although Masa clearly had its fans.

We also plan on going to La Folie.

I was sort of leaning towards doing the RC for dinner and room, but found out that during the dates that I am planning on doing this the dining room at the RC is going to be closed for remodeling. I think they are planning on opening again in early September. Never been to La Folie, so I am really excited about that.

Aha - I thought you meant RC dining room, not RC hotel.
