Boutique hotel in San Francisco for an older couple

My husband (mid 60s) and I (mid 50s) are from the UK and plan to stay in San Francisco in January. We would like to stay in a boutique hotel in the Union Square area. Have looked at the Kimpton group but would be interested in other recommendations at a room rate of $120-$150.

Try Petite Auberge:

Within in your budget and located between Nob Hill and Union Square.

Try the Allison Hotel at 417 Stockton Street. Has a lot of character - breakfast included and relatively inexpensive. Has the feel of a European hotel, but very San Francisco.

Try Joie de Vivre Hospitality at www.jdvhospitality.com. They have several boutique hotels in SF...each with its own personality. They have a great feature on their website called a hotel matchmaker. Answer the questions and it recommends their hotels that best fit your needs. Happy Travels!

Talking of boutique hotels...try the Andrews on Post Street, two blocks to Union Square..only forty rooms or so.. Great buffet breakfast on each floor in a.m., glass of wine in their Fino Restaurant..(great food)

Not at $120 pn, but a gorgeous boutique hotel is Hotel Monaco...

Kimpton Hotels are TERRIFIC--try the Villa Florence- prices are usually great and location is just off Union Sq so NO up hill climbs....

The Diva - UP A HILL from Union Sq in the theater district is funky and modern but the walk uphill may kill you if you are not in shape...

Hello JennyK, I did not respond to your post because you indicated that you would be interested in other recommendations besides the Kimpton Hotels.

Then I read Andy's post and decided to just make a comment.

The Villa Florence which is on Post St., just one half block or less south of Union Square is a wonderful hotel.
You possibly have looked at their website if you have looked at the SF Kimpton Hotel website. As far as boutique hotels right at Union Square I personally do not think you could do any better. Welcome to San Francisco!

Just want to say thank you for all the suggestions. Having checked them out on Tripadvisor etc., I think that we will be booking the Petite Auberge as we are light sleepers and some of the others can be noisy. We will also try to get one of the larger rooms. I am sure that we will love our visit.

JennyK--

Just remember that the Petite Auberge is TOTALLY UPHILL ( about 5 TALL LONG blocks )from Union Sq area...

Walk it down and Cab it UP...

It is a GORGEOUS cosy place!
You will LOVE it! It is really more of a fancy BnB....
