joseandsusan: please give us some more information so that we can help you better.
How many days do you plan to spend in SF? In Monterey?
What is your budget for the hotel? $100? $200? $300? a night?
Will you have a car? parking in SF is expensive. We could recommend places where parking is free. Are you interested in saving the hotel parking fees?
Will you have children with you? What are their ages?
Finally, what are your interests? Music? Museums? Good restaurants? Shopping?
Please help us to help you!

Thanks easytraveler
My wife and I will arrive S.F. 11/17 and leave S.F. 11/24. Would like to travel south to Monterrey in a scenic hwy. and stay anywhere along the way. We will rent a car. We like picturesque places and good restaurants and will stay in medium priced hotels/motels that are comfortable.

The scenic route part is easy - I would head south from SF on Hwy 280 and then cut over to Hwy 1 on Hwy 92. This will take you through Half Moon Bay and then south along the San Mateo coast, through Santa Cruz, and then on to Monterey.
Someone else will be able to help with hotel recommendations.

you have lots of options with the amount of time you have. Driving over the golden gate at least to muir woods is much fun. SF is also a place many like, with Chinatown, Alcatraz, cable csrs, ferries, and museums.
my personal favorite area is the 40 mile drive from carmel to south of big sur. it is about as spectacular an area as I have ever encountered. the word breath-taking comes to mind.
there are lots of places to stay all along the route from SF down to Big sur, with prices varying pretty dramatically. MOnterey and pacific grove and carmel have a lot of places with various prcie points.

Thanks DOVINA for the correction of "Monterey". At one time I did business with a bank in Monterrey, MX, and the extra R got stuck in my mind.
Anyway, does anyone know "Casa Munras" hotel in Monterrey? I got a good deal there on rooms during Thanksgiving week. We plan to spend three nights there and then drive north to San Francisco, stopping "someplace" along the way for a night and they finishing our stay in SF and then flying home to Charleston, SC.

San Francisco to Monterey typically is more like 2 1/2 hours. and longer if you go the scenic route through Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz. Still an overnight stop isn't needed unless you want to. I've heard Casa Munras is a nice place but I haven't personally stayed there.

Casa Munras is a very old hotel in Monterey. I would suggest looking at hotel reviews at tripadvisor.com and just typing in "Monterey Ca hotels" in Yahoo for some of the reviews on Yahoo. Another place for hotel reviews is mytravelguide.com.
It appears that the Casa Munras is under repair/construction.
If you know how to use Priceline, you can get the Marina Dunes Resort for around $100-#120. Or you can get the Casa Munras for $130, the Hilton Garden Inn for a wildly ranging $85-$135.
I'd suggest going south of Monterey at least one day to Big Sur. "Breath-taking" is the word!

We like the town of Half Moon Bay - we live in San Jose and like to head over there for day trips or overnight. We haven't spent the night there in awhile, but in the past we have stayed at the Zaballa House on Main and really liked it.
