Something to consider when your planning your trip. It sounds like your arrival time is around President's Day, which means high demand areas(Santa Barbara, Palm Springs etc.) will jack up their rates and possibly require a 3 night minimum. I'd work around getting gouged.
I agree, during that time of year you'd be better off visiting So.Cal, but expect Las Vegas to be chilly. You mentioned you like the desert- Palm Springs area should be pleasant that time of the year. Anywhere else, is a hit and miss.
