San Fran July w/ 7yo

Does anyone have suggestions on tours or must see fun things to take in w/ a 7 year old boy this July? We will be there 4 days and have looked into the firetruck accross the GG bridge, trolley rides and the waterfront. Thanks.

Arcades, sports. We've ruled out the walking tour of Alcatraz, but hopefully will take a ferry around if possible. Does anyone know how far out of the main city the SF Zoo is? Is it a reasonable taxi ride or available via public transportation?

The Exploratorium would be fun. I think he would enjoy Alcatraz.

A second vote for the Exploratorium. You might also check out the Chabot Science Center over in Oakland. Look into the Academy of Science and Aquarium in Golden Gate Park(SF). There is a fortune cookie factory tour in Chinatwon and there is a Teddy Bear Factory on Mariposa(Portrero Hgts).

Depending on where you are staying the zoo can be a $$ taxi ride. It is out on Sloat which is near the ocean. There is public transportation which will be a bus or 2.

Unfortunately the Academy of Science and Aquarium in GG Park are closed for renovation now. The Academy of Science has moved to a temporary location downtown (sorry, don't know where.)

Kids usually enjoy riding down Lombard Street, playing at the Exploratorium, walking across the GG Bridge, riding the cable cars (you could tie that in with a visit to the cable car museum), seeing the live crabs at Fisherman's Wharf, climbing around the boats at the Hyde Street Pier, the trip to Alcatraz ... The zoo is nice but a little out of the way. You can certainly keep it in mind if you run out of other activities.

How about going to a Giants game if they're playing while you're in town. The stadium is very nice with an area with slides and a few amusements if your son gets bored watching the game. Also, there are great views of the boats on the Bay.

Hope this helps!

The Discovery Museum - isn't that in Sausalito? I have family members that take their childreen their all the time. Do I have the name correct?

Sharkgb, you could take the ferry (you catch it at the Ferry Bldg at the foot of Market St.) to Sausalito. Imagine your little guy would love the ferry across SF Bay also. Please, anyone, if I do not have the name correct please let sharkgb know. Thanks.

Seven might be a wee bit old for the Discovery Museum. At the upper end of their target, for sure. The Exploratorium is a better fit for a seven year old.
