San Fran hotel location/accomodations

My second trip to San Fran is coming up early July for 4 nights. After much searching and info gathering, I have made reservations at the Beresford Arms, 701 Post St. I have selected this hotel because of its central and convenient location and because it has a kitchenette.

I can handle the homeless and odors, etc. to a certain extent; however, after reading reviews elsewhere, I wonder if I am making a mistake staying in this location? How bad is it? I am sympathetic, but also sensitive, i.e., I don't want a whitewashed experienced nor do I want to be accousted.

Know of any other hotels with kitchenette for approx $125?

Thank you.

As much as I like the Cow Hollow Suites, it's twice the price of what you are willing to spend.

If you have a AAA membership, you can get a discounted rate at Cow Hollow Suites. Another alternative is the Grosvenor Suites in the Nob Hill area and each room has a kitchen. It's definitely in your price range.

If someone is a military vet, the Marines' Memorial is an option.

Can you forego the kitchenette? Food is so cheap in SF.. dine out. I mean, really cheap. If you can, you can bid Priceline (gee I feel like a cheap ad, I've just recommended this on a separate post). You can bid a 4* hotel for about 70 and get something really nice like the Hilton. Check out biddingfortravel.com. If you really need the kitchenette, I don't have any good ideas for you, except to check out tripadvisor.com . Good luck and have fun! And don't be afraid of those homeless souls. They aren't aggressive, just sad. I stayed at a location (nice nice hotel, can't remember the name) across from the Orpheum theatre in SF in an area I thought was good. NOT. Lots of drug thugs hanging around the Bart station entrance. Closer to Union Square is better. Definitely finer characters in that area.

Your location on Post is fine, don't let the SF bashers deter you - after all this is not your first time there and you have a good idea as to what each area of the city has to offer. I have stayed at The Andrews and the Pan Pacific both on Post; the location was perfectly fine as far as safety (but use the same common sense you would in NY, Chicago, etc.) we walked back to our hotel often late at night with no problems. As you stated the location is very convenient, transportation, theaters, shopping, restaurants, etc. are all right there. Enjoy your trip!

We like The Andrews Hotels at 624 Post Street...It does't have a kitchenette, but each a.m. on each floor is a huge continental breakfast with muffins, scones, fruit, bagels, juice, coffee and tea. There is a little store at the corner to pick up snacks. It would be in your price range.. We are seniors and do no find the "homeless" a problem there. www.andrewshotel.com

I personally love the Chancellor Hotel. It's below the price you listed and absolutely European charming. Right on the Cable Car track (altho I never have used it from there) but across from Union Square. (ask for a room with a view of Union Square). You can probably get it for 80-100 per night. No kitchenettes. BEST BEST BEST location ever!! check out it's web site. I just recommended it to another poster and I'll give you the review page at trip advisor . http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev...alifornia.html

I am in the neighborhood of the Beresford Arms and the Andrews Hotel on a weekly or more frequent basis. I don't think of the immediate area as being particularly unsightly or dangerous at all. Post Street is a very good place to catch buses headed eastbound, so it's convenient. The area directly to the south, between Post and Market, can be a bit rough, esp. after dark, so if you want to walk to Market Street, walk over to Powell and then take a right - very lively at hours and safe. I would not worry. If the Beresford suits your budget needs, book it and just use your usual street smarts.

Meant to say that Powell St. is very lively at ALL hours - but you knew that!

Thanks, all. For a while yesterday I wondered if I would receive any responses.

Grosvenor was one of my first picks, but it didn't pan out. I've checked out so many places, I can't recall exactly why. I need a room with two doubles.

Thanks for the other specific recommendations. I do intend to look into those further and will keep you posted.

Yes, I have read the threads on tripadvisor.com about the Beresford and many other hotels.

As for the kitchenette, I mainly want this because I like to store and reheat leftovers and have food whenever I want it. LOL. Eat about 6 times a day. We won't be cooking any meals per se, unless you consider a couple of Bloody Marys a meal. I suppose I could get by with a coffeemaker and mini-refrigerator.
