Debi, for a romantic dinner go to Tonga Room in the Fairmont hotel - they don't advertise much, opened for dinners only. From... is it 7 or 8? there is a thunderstorm with lightning and real rain every 1/2 hour. You can also dance there to a live band on a boat. Yes, on a boat - there is a pool in the middle. No view, but nice decor.

i am unaware of the evening schedules. hopefully a local can point you towards a website.
i just dropped my parents off there and drove across to meet them when they got off. i remembered it was next to spinnaker , where we had had some lovely lunches other years.
i am making note of the other recs, too. they all sound good!

Responding to the "view" part of this message: we were in SF in June and tried the Waterfront Restaurant, Pier 7 on the Embarcadero www.waterfrontsf.com which I reserved on opentable.com
You can get tables overlooking the water and it's a pretty restaurant. The food is very good, not great. The service was NOT good - everyone who worked there seemed new and unfamiliar with the menu and how to serve!
My current favorite for food in SF is Kokkari in the financial district, a Greek/mediterranean restaurant with spectacular food and great service http://www.kokkari.com/. It can be a bit noisy, though - it's big and not romantic.
Happy anniversary, though - and many more!

Thanks so much for all the suggestions. I am making reservations at the Spinnaker for our actual anniversary date as we will be driving in from Napa that day, and will do McCormick and Kuleto another evening. The Italian restaurants sound very good also.
