In August I would skip everything in Eastern California with the exception of Yosemite.
California is almost 2 different states. Northern California is as beautiful as So Cal, in different ways.
Where are you coming from? It sounds like you'd like to spend some time in the desert and are you prepared for how hot it will be?
What do you want to see in San Diego?
Are you interested in hiking? culture?

Tomsd, I gave a link to a rental car company that caters to UK and European travelers that is often able to get the one way dropoff fee waived especially on a popular route such as this.
