San Diego info
I have an upcoming business trip to San Diego. With luck, I'll have about a half day to myself. I would like to plan an afternoon and go somewhere different since I've done the usual touristy things. Would Capistrano mission be to far? Any other ideas?
Thanks in advance!

Yes the San Juan Capistrano mission would be too far. There is a mission in San Diego though, above Old Town at Presidio Park. Also, I have enjoyed driving out to the lighthouse at the end of Point Loma. Beautiful views.

You should consider Torrey Pines State Reserve if you haven't been there. Beautiful beach/hiking trails on bluffs over looking the ocean.
The Presidio is not a mission. The San Diego mission is Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcala, try: www.missionsandiego.com.
The Presidio *is* a very nice place to spend an afternoon though.

The Presidio is nice and basically in Old Town so you could combine the two. Or the Mission - in Mission Valley, just east of Qualcomm stadium - is also interesting (I prefer the Presidio, more to do and see).
Capistrano is about 1 hr north of downtown SD (if you drive like I do), 1.5 hours max assuming it's not rush hour! I'd say go for it if you have at least 6 hours (1 to drive up, 2ish to look around and 2ish to drive back - it will probably be rush hour by then if you're talking late afternoon).

I also have an upcoming business trip to San Diego in the first week of June. Will have a full Saturday open for sightseeing. I have never been there and would like to get some recommendations as to where to go. I am not interested in kid's oriented activities (family won't join me this time). More into landscapes, historic places, trails. Willing to drive up to 2h. Suggestions? Thanks in advance!

satrijoe: In addition to the Presidio, Old Town and Mission San Diego de Alcala, drive out to the Cabrillo National Monument on Point Loma (that's where the old lighthouse is). You might also find Balboa Park and its museums interesting.

Hi, Barbara. Thanks for the quick reply.
Do you think I can visit all the places that you mentioned in one day? If not, which ones do you think are more interesting? (I know this is subject). Not much into museums. I rather go do outdoor stuff. Thanks!

satrijoe: if you don't want to do museums, you could do all the rest in one day. I would suggest doing the Presidio and Old Town in the morning (start early) and the Mission -keep in mind it is still a functioning church, so you may encounter a wedding on a Saturday - and the Cabrillo Monument in the afternoon. The reason I'd leave Cabrillo till the afternoon is that you will want to take pictures and by the afternoon the sun will be a little behind you to the west.

Just came back from my trip. Unfortunately the weather did not help my outdoor activity (it was cloudy and sometimes drizzling).
This is what I did:
La Jolla / Cove: Beautiful place. excellent for pictures, some people fishing, snorkeling or just laying down under the sun (only day it was sunny). Highly recommend.
Mission San Diego: Nicely restored, worth for its historical value as the first mission in California. It is a short visit though (1h max).
Presidio / Old Town: Interesting. Exhibits here and there, probably a good visit in the afternoon to stay and have dinner afterwards. The excavation site that was supposed to be by Presidio does not exist anymore.
Cabrillo monument: Nice view of the bay, again would be better with sunny weather. Worth the ride.
Looking forward to going back with family to visit Balboa Park, Legoland, Sea World...
PS: Went to a Pearl Jam Concert at the San Diego Sports Arena, awesome!

Hi Barbara! It's just as ugly up the coast (although I'm looking out my office window and the sun is shining over Catalina Island-- unbelievable sight!!). Happily, it should be just dandy in July, right? I can't wait to spend a weekend or two down in your neck of the woods...!!!

rjw, I spent Friday and Saturday in Cerritos at the State Track & Field Championships. It was cloudy there, but warm. When I got back down to San Diego on Saturday night it was actually raining and cold.
The Sheraton in Cerritos has just finished refurbishing all their rooms and they now have bedding that is very similar to the Westin's Heavenly Bed. It was a very pleasant surprise!
