San diego and then...

I have a meeting in San Diego in Feb. I want to do something for a 40th birthday with friends. Any suggestion? Mexico, Lake Tahoe? Appreciate suggestions!

Are you talking about doing something on the day of the 40th b-day or for several days: how much time do you have?

Maybe even a week. Not sure as I am searching for ideas. Mexico, Hawaii, Lake Tahoe, etc. Thanks!

Can't say that I'd recommend heading down to Mexico right now. The lines at the border crossings are horrendous! And from what I've been told by friends, the lines at the airports coming back aren't any better.

The weather in Palm Springs is great in February. I'd head out that direction and enjoy some sun and fun. Just be sure to make your reservations soon.

Normally I recommend flying INTO San Diego and OUT OF San Francisco, doing the scenic coastal drive in between with stops in Del Mar or Laguna Beach, Santa Monica/Malibu, Santa Barbara, San Simeon and Carmel. However, February is just the worst in California weather-wise, often very rainy.

Tahoe or Sun Valley Idaho would be great if you have skiers in the group.

Palm Springs is a nice drive from San Diego, you could rent a car one way from San Diego to Las Vegas with a stop in between in Palm Springs, flying home from Las Vegas.

I agree with the coastal drive and flying out of San Francisco, if it is at all possible. I have made this trip several times and have always really enjoyed it. What are you looking for? Relaxation, sightseeing?

Palm Springs is an interesting thought...never been. Any suggestions on where to stay there? What is there to do? I am not completely narrowed down on this...how far is Sun Valley Idaho from San Diego?

Sun Valley, Idaho is not within driving range for a week trip.

What kind of price range are you looking for in terms of lodging? Any special interests? Golf, tennis, spas?

Went to Palm Springs last February. Stayed in the Renaissance Esmarelda. Very nice Hotel with a great pool. Had a corner room that overlooked the pool. Very spacious. Had a great time. We only statyed the weekend but if you were staying longer you could take advantage of their Spa treatments and see the sites around the area. Had some great food and many laughs.

Price range...it depends what was included, etc. I guess if I were going for a week or more, I would be willing to spend a bit more like for a ski vacation, etc. Also love spas, and most definitely would take advantage of that for a few days.
