Stay in Coronado-perfect for families.
It has the best beach in all of San Diego. Its also a small manageable part of San Diego. orange avenue is a pleasure to stroll. Stay at the Marriott resort, my favorite in the city.
Its also within walking distance to shops which overlook the bay.

The La Jolla Beach and Tennis club has condos which would be a great option for you. They are actually quite reasonable for the space you get and are on a great beach. It is also a good central location for San Diego attractions. Coronado is nice, but kind of out of the way unless you don't plan on leaving the resort.

I recommended Coronado before.
Like everything in San Diego-its 15 minutes from downtown, zoos, etc.
the Marriott is in walking distance to quaint shops, one mile from the best beach in SD, with Spreckels park for kids in the middle, etc. You can take the neat little ferry to the gaslamp area. To say its out of the way and a place to go if you don't want to leave the resort is completely wrong. Coronado is also the cleanest and safest
little community out there.

Ditto on Coronado. Not only is the town (it is a real town, by the way...not just a resort) very safe and fun, but it is closer to the Zoo, Balboa park, gaslamp quarter, and shopping centers than Mission Beach or La Jolla. You can rent bikes or little pedal trollies to go safely go all over town, and the beach is BIG and gentle. MB and La Jolla are nice too, but both are more active, crowded places, and I think you'd enjoy them more with older kids. Try the Hotel del, or Marriot is nice, It's a bit farther from the beach and downtown coronado, but it is on the bay, so it is an interesting location as well. The Glorietta Bay Inn is nice, or you might see if there are condos at the Shores in your price range. They are on the beach just south of the Del.
