For what it's worth, my family just stayed at the Loews Coronado in late January. That would be me, my wife, and 2 children (ages 9 and 11). We paid 225 per night (AAA discount). The hotel was nice. I would call it kid friendly, but do not confuse it with a place geared for families. It was a convention type hotel that looked to cater to business people and also to boaters with it's marina. We got lucky though, and basically had the hotel to ourselves for a few days because it seemed like we stayed between conventions. The day that we left (a Wednesday) it was packed with suits. I didn't see that as a problem, but it could lead to crowds of people. These are my pros and cons as far as what I saw from my standpoint. Bear in mind that I am telling this to you taking into consideration of the fact that your children are the same ages as mine, and possibly my info will help a little. I'll start with the cons:
-The gameroom was very small. The kids will probably like it, but it is not a good one.
-The hotel is a convention and wedding type of place.
-The hotel is secluded from everywhere. We had no car but they had public transportation as well as a hotel shuttle so it actually wasn't a real big deal.
-They have basically one regular restauraunt, and one upscale one. Since we were with the kids, we ate in the regular one every day and ordered room service alot too. The food was good though, and I will say that my children loved it. A bit pricey, but convienent.
-They are not on the beach. Sure the hotel is close (1/2 mile away), but it's not that kind of half mile enjoyable walk. You have to cross a main road to get to it if you want to walk there. We didn't bother. Laying by the pool and swimming in it was great as far as we were concerned.
-It's not the Del, and the Coronado area seems to be infatuated with the Del. They build that place up to be the best. We visited the Del, and it looked crowded and a little touristy. It seemed like everybody visits that place.
Now the pros:
-It's a Loews hotel. I have always had good luck at any Loews. They seem to take care of their guests very well. I love a Loews.
-It's private and secluded. I actually felt like I was on an island. Nobody was strolling in to visit like they were doing at the Del.
-It was priced right. For the money, I felt like it was worth it.
-The room was nice. Granted we were in a suite, so I can't say how nice the basic rooms were, but mine was well kept. The view of the bay was spectacular.
-The staff was friendly. I've read some negative stuff, but everybody treated us great. Maybe it was because we were friendly back to them, but I really felt welcome there.
-The pools were nice as well as the grounds. We swam mostly every day. We got lucky and it was in the 70's with no rain (during late January even). We also liked the tennis courts.
That is just my two cents on the subject. I'm sure that you will enjoy it there if that is what you choose. I will say that this hotel is not to be confused with a Disney hotel. Be prepared to be in the middle of a convention, because it could very well happen. I'm not sure if that will really matter to you though. Good luck no matter where you stay. I know that all of us really enjoyed our stay there.

We have stayed at the Del many times over the years, and some of those times with our children. We always gt a room with an ocean view, and in the older part of the hotel. For us, the Del is perfect. We have never had a problem with people who are not staying there. The Sunday brunch is very nice. The regular morning breakfast buffet out on the front patio is great also. So far, we have never been disappointed in the hotel and all it has to offer.
