Salt Lake City to Capitol Reef

Any suggestions on things to see or routes to take on Sunday-Tuesday day trip from Salt Lake City to Capitol Reef and back?

Thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan,

It's a 3.5 -4 hour drive one way. Are you sure you want to do this as a day trip?

Dayle,

I wasn't clear on the first post. We (my wife and I) leave Salt Lake City Sunday morning. Have reserved 2 nights (Sun. & Mon.) in Torrey.
And fly out of Salt Lake Wednesday morning so we'll probably need to stay Tues. night near the airport at Salt Lake. Also...this is for next week

Thanks,
Dan

Since your time at Capitol Reef will be so short, I'd recommend getting there and spending the time at Capitol Reef.

If you want something to do either on the way to or from Capitol Reef, drive Interstate 70 between Salina, Utah and the junction of Hwy 24. This is a very scenic area called the San Rafael Swell. Between I-70 and Hanksville, Utah is Goblin State Park.

I second the "get to Capital Reef quickly" idea. It is amazing and you won't want to cut it short. Check out a restaurant named something like the Painted Pony (mexican) in Torrey--yummy. The other little "day trip" you will want to take is to take Hiway 12 up over Boulder Mountain on the old mail route to Escalante. Eat at the Boulder Mountain Inn. It's a gorgeous area. There is a Radisson very close to the airport-stay there.

OK, now it makes sense! Personally I think the drive up and over Boulder Mtn is very pretty - high altitude with aspens, but the best part of that drive is actually between Escalante and Boulder. If you do decide to have lunch at the Hell's Backbone Grill, make advance reservations, or it will be a drive for nothing.

When coming back to SLC, you should time your return drive so that you miss the evening rush hour. Drive through Provo then SLC valley before 4pm or after 6:30 pm.

2 days in Capitol Reef during the summer will be just enough. You'll want to start hiking early and finish early - then hit the pool!
