RVing question

Planning to fly to Alaska in late August and rent an RV for about 10 days, heading for Kenai Peninsula. RV idea appeals to us because of the flexibility, yet reservations seem to be recommended.Have researched RV parks, several seem very appealing.Maybe 2 or 3 days at each? Any ideas from those who have done this trip by RV?

I can't answer your question, but you may be able to find something on one of the RV forums, such as http://www.rv.net/forum/

we used Great Alaskan to rent our RV. They were very nice, the RVs are new and clean, and they have a state park pass that can save you money if you decide to stay in state parks. We stayed 4 nights in state parks, 6 in private parks.

We had no trouble getting into any park (we went north to Fairbanks, not to the Kenai Peninsula). THe only possible problem would have been in Fairbanks on July 3 where we got one of the last 2 spaces.

I'm not going to be much help, but we drove to Alaska with our suburban and trailer in 1992 and didn't have any reservations. Only problem we had was near Denali, but the KOA let us park in the overflow. I'm sure things have changed in the last 12 years.

I also recommend asking over at The Open Road Forums at

End of August, most RV parks are empty. The exception is Denali Park which is full through the first week of Sept. I too rented from Great Alaskan Holidays. The only negative, I greatly missed the contact with locals I had always experienced with staying at B&B's. Be certain to budget for the insurance waiver that RV operator's offer. Plenty can happen and verify your auto insurance coverage- none with my policy and no AAA.
