Ruth's Chris

I know it's a chain, but we need a place to celebrate a college graduation on a weeknight for steak lovers. Ruth's Chris was suggested. Any feedback as to atmosphere, price, recommended sides, or alternative locations would be appreciated as we're not from that area. Thanks.

Correction: I posted this to the Maryland Board, but noticed that it's also coming up under "United States." I should have been more specific and stated that I'm referring to the Baltimore Inner Harbor location. Thanks.

I have not eaten at that particual one but have eaten at several others. The steaks are wonderful - my favorite is the large Filet. Enjoy!!

In addition to the steaks, the vegetables are the best I've had....better than home. Grilled tomatoes, mashed potatoes, etc....just wonderful. And a serving is more than enough for two people.

Ruth's Chris is a great choice!

Why such an awkward name for this restaurant chain? Ruth's Chris? Am I missing something?

fyi: The original name of the restaurant was Chris Steak House. But when Ruth Fertel decided to buy it, she named it Ruth's Chris Steak House, against the advice of everyone. (She died in April.)

The Chris Steak House was originally named for the founder's son, Christopher. It was a super successful enterprise, and when Ruth bought the place, she didn't want to lose "the successful brand name" so she gave it that odd name so people would know it was still basically the same restaurant chain. The steaks are fabulous at the one here in Cary, NC, and I also LOVE her grilled tomatoes and garlic mashed potatoes! Enjoy!

It may be a chain, but it's one of the highest quality restaurant chains in the world.
The Four Seasons hotels are a chain. But I have no problem with the quality there.

Darla could have been more informative and less curt: It's true that there is 'only' a United States board. The option to click on a state is, I think, to aid the "search" function, so that when someone else comes along, searching for info on Balto or Maryland, they can type that in and posts will be automatically sorted and retrieved accordingly.

Yes...as you by now have deduced, Judy - Ruth's Chris will be a good choice with excellent food (but bring your wallet, maybe several...)

Many thanks for all the great replies! I had hoped to hear from someone with specific knowledge of the Baltimore location, since I'm sure there are variations, but I'm delighted that everyone recommends it, and I'm sure it will be a good choice. By the way, how expensive is expensive?

As to having a Maryland "board," I guess that what I was referring to was that if you click on Maryland (or any state) and then on find, you get a listing of all postings specific to that state. To my mind that was a "sub board" of the US, but it seems I'm mistaken.

Large filet is about $26, ribeye is $29. Most dishes seem to be between $20 and $30. I actually had the stuffed chicken there once and it was great. You can order your steak cooked a bit rarer then you like, as it tends to cook on the 500-degree plate once at your table. I think their wines by the glass start at about $8. Creme brulee is awesome. Our location here in N. Palm Beach has a very nice private room, you might want to see if your location has one.

Judy,
I think Darla was a little out of line on her response. I agree with Steakie.

EVERYTHING is A LA CARTE which really runs that bill up! If you have a drink, then eat the way you might at Outback - like salad, entree, split dessert between two, etc., you're talking easily $60/person or more!

They used to have a website ruthschris.com - but I was unable to access it today and don't know if this is permanent or not. I did a search on google using ruths chris baltimore and came up with several restaurant review sites - you might want to check it out.

The Baltimore location is fancier than the location that is just outside of Baltimore. Neither my husband nor I drink alcohol, and our bill came to close to $100 for the two of us. We ordered two steaks, then we split an order of mashed potatoes, and had 2 sodas.

It's a dependably good meal, but there are a lot of other nicer restaraunts in the Baltimore area.

Clara, thanks for the Baltimore-specific info. What other nicer restaurants would you recommend in the area for steak lovers?
