I live in Tampa, FL and am thinking about relocating with my job to High Point.My
husband and I are trying for a baby and we want a good area to raise our child that also has access to good restaurants, weather and outdoor activies. We want a small town (we're not night owls) but we don't want to go stir crazy either...would High Point be a good place? Can anyone tell me anything about this place, aside from it's furniture attributes? I absolutely love the real estate market-the houses have so much more character and charm for so much less $ than Tampa! Thanks so much!

I live about an hour from High Point. It is a nice little town with some excellent restaurants and a couple of nice shops. It is waaaay too dependent on the Furniture Market which is getting some major competition from Las Vegas. The school system is good and you are within an hour of Raleigh, Chapel Hill and Charlotte if you want some options.

This is a great area to raise a family. There are three cities with in a 15/20 minute drive. High Point is the smaller and in my opinion the least interesting of the three but still has some good restaurants and very nice nieghborhoods. Winston-Salem and Greensboro have a much better selection on restaurants and more things to do. Winston-Salem is more into the art sence and Greensboro a bit more comsmo but but are nice. Many people spend time in all three and will live in one city and work in the other. Others live in the rural areas between the cites, like me, so you get a great rural life and with a 15 minute drive the benifits of the cities. You are within one hour of the mountains with great hiking, camping, a large selection of B&Bs and great music. You are also about 3 1/2 hours from the coast

Of course, if you have a decent house in High Point, you can easily rent it out two weeks a year during Market for something like $5000 a week and escape that madness.

Market sounds like it could be industrious ! It seems ideal-the best of 3 worlds and a beach vacation during Market! Thanks so much for responding...

My ex sister in law used to rent out her one bedroom condo for $2500 for market. Yikes!
