There is always good ole South of the Border - kinda cheesy but the motel is normally inexpensive, the gift shops are fun to browse in, the restaurants are decent and you certainly can't get lost as there are signs for miles!

As for South of the Border, we stayed there recently. There were some rooms that were not on the main property but rather across the street that looked the nicest. We got one of the standard rooms. When we got there, the room was cheaper than they quoted us via cell phone ten minutes before we arrived.
Tell your parents to head on out, there are plenty of places to stay, many chain hotels, the rates are all very reasonable. Then just stop when they are tired of driving.

We like to stay in Sleep Inns, or Comfort Inns. Most of these are right off the Interstate, so you do have easy on/off exits. They have very good discounts for seniors.
Where are they starting from and heading to? That might help us find the right spot. How far do they like to drive in a certain period of time? If you/they are members of AAA, you can go on their website and look in their map section and find what you are looking for.

If they're going as far as the Walterboro-Orangeburg area, I recommend they stop in Santee. Specifically, the Best Western is decent and has a gooc continental breakfast.
Also, the Ramada in Santee is OK. It's right across the street from the Best Western, and both are less than a mile from 95.
I'd be wary of recommendations that say you're on safe ground by staying at any one property that's in a particular chain. I've been in some chains that were great. Then another a few miles away was a dump. A lot epends in the person operating the franchise. Just my opinion based on experience.
