Rose Bowl Game & Parade Transortation
I am planning on going to the Rose Bowl Game and Parade on 1-1-2014. I am staying with my brother in Oxnard. I need to find out the best way to get to the parade (I am going
to get reserved tickets) and then to the game and then back to Oxnard.

My advice
Rent a car, drive down to Pasadena VERY early (I'm mean leaving at about 3am on January 1), pay the fee for a parking space (the "men in white" will direct you), then ride the free shuttle to the game

My family used to live in Santa Barbara, and this is what we did each of the three times we went down to the Rose Parade. Yes, parking is expensive but, compared to the price of at game ticket, it'll be a small addition.
Car rental will be less than spending the night in the L.A. area at a time when motels jack up their prices and require minimum, multi-day stays.
If you can get down to the L.A. area on December 31 by bus or train, you MIGHT consider taking mass transit to the Pasadena area that evening

sleeping on Colorado Blvd that night (don't count on a long or restful sleep), and then returning to the L.A. area on the evening of January 1st. If you arrange your transport WAY in advance, you should be able to get back to Oxnard early in the morning of January 2nd, at which point you just crash for that day.

I think when you get a ticket, this includes parking space in a certain parking lot close to your seating section.
We came early as per their written instructions, but it's not true that they close parking lots, we saw people arriving till the start of the parade.
The seating space is very tight, and the seats are wooden - maybe you want a flat pillow to sit on.

We have parked at Union Station in downtown L.A. and taken the Gold Line (light rail) to Old Town Pasadena. You can take the Rose Bowl shuttle bus to the stadium, although it's possible to walk (1.5 miles) or taxi. FYI, the wait in line for the shuttle bus back to Pasadena after the game is lonnnggg.

I write a column on the Tournament of Roses, so I'll post a links to transportation below. They were written a couple years ago but the info is still accurate.
Here's what you need to know before start:
What does the package you got include? If you already have a game ticket, that tells me you purchased through a third party. Does it include parking? If you purchased the Rose Parade seats through Sharp, it does NOT include parking, you have to pay extra for that.
Where are your parade seats? If they are on the west side (Orange Grove or on Colorado close to Orange Grove), you might be able to walk to the Rose Bowl or to Parsons to catch a shuttle. It is a long walk, and hilly.
Jean's advice to take the Gold Line is good. They add trains that day, so your wait will be short. I live in Altadena and have taken the train for the past two years. You'll find the people friendly and they can give you some tips, too! Get off at the stop closest to you parade seats. (I know that seems obvious, but it does mean looking at a few maps.)
You can order parking in advance through Sharp or Standard parking (links in the article), which I highly recommend so you aren't driving around in gridlock to find a space. That said, you will be able to find a place even after the parade starts.
BTW, if you don't have your Rose Bowl Game ticket yet, be aware that they are very difficult to get. Most tickets go to the schools playing, the rest are distributed by lottery. Have other plans in place--such as going to view the floats post-parade (it's a lot of fun and there are food booths and other things to do). If you take the Gold Line and you aren't going to the game, I suggest getting a bite to eat and killing an hour or two to avoid the long lines to get on the train.
