Romantic trip to Ogunquit and Kennebunkport Maine

My husband and I are planning a trip to
Ogunguit and Kennebunkport Maine for 2-3
days. We would love suggestions on where
to stay, where to eat and shop, and what
to do? Thanks!

You don't mention when you will be there, and some places close for all or part of the winter, but here goes: there is a restaurant in Ogunquit called Arrows; the setting, food, service, ambiance--everything--is absolutely first-class. The White Barn Inn in Kennebunkport is romantic; Nunan's in Cape Porpoise is great for lobster (don't get dressed up!); the Oceanview B&B right on Kennebunk Beach is wonderful; The Salt Marsh Tavern and its sister inn/restaurant, The Cape Arundal (practically across from the Bushs' place on Ocean Avenue) are also good. There's great and unusual shopping in Dock Square (in particular: Carrot's, Compliments, The Snappy Turtle). A great breakfast place is The Green Heron, also in Kennebunkport. I'm sure others can and will add more; you will love this part of Maine.

We had a great dinner at Chauncy Creek, which is about 1/2 an hour from Ogunquit, near Kittery. They serve lobster, clams, corn on the cob, etc. You take your own alcohol and any side dishes they don't serve, which is kind of fun. You eat on picnic tables outside, which is right on the creek, so go when it's warm and make sure you have bug spray. I went there with my wife last week and we loved it. Another good place to eat is the Maine Diner in Wells Beach, about half way between K'port and Ogunquit. The seafood chowder there is great. For steamer clams, get take out from the Yodelng Clam in Wells Beach, which are the best and cost about $4 a pound.

Shopping is probably best in K'port.

Do not go to the amusement park in Old Orchard Park/Beach. It's old, grungy and overrun with kids.

Hope this helps.

My favorite Bed & Breakfast is The Maine Stay. I also enjoy dining at The Tides, Seascapes, or Grissini. Hurricanes in Ogunquit is also excellent!

My husband and I have been to Ogunquit/Kennebunkport twice and love the area - we stayed at the Cliff House and highly recommend it, I'd like to second the praise for Nunan's Lobster Hut in Cape Porpoise - they have the best steamed lobster there is...also, Billy's Chowder House in Wells (the original location) for the best lobster stew and lobster roll and fried haddock sandwich..the Lobster Pound in Ogunquit is good too and Mabel's Lobster Claw in Kennebunkport is reportedly excellent although we did not eat there - we loved this area of Maine and hopefully will get to go back one day.

If you're on a budget, the Yardarm Village Inn is a lovely B&B in Ogunquit with a wine and cheese shop within and a delightful breakfast served on the wrap-around porch (with a glimpse of Perkins Cove) that includes awesome blueberry muffins. Be sure to have a drink at the Cliff House. If Michael is performing at Valerie's in Ogunquit, and you like old standards and show tunes, he's not to be missed. The piano bar at the Kennebunkport Inn is nice also. Stay away from the Shawmut in Kennebunkport.

Ruthie,

Check out an area called Perkins Cove by Ogunquit. Through the vistors bureau up in that area we got the name of a B&B that was a restored old sea captains house, The place was charming, full of history, and offered a spectacular waterfront location. I have fond memories of warm fresh blueberry muffins greeting us in the mornings as we watched the waves crashing to the rocky shore in the back yard. It was also convenient to many activities in the area. Sorry, it was a few years back so I do not recall the name of the place, but Perkins Cove is not that big so I'm sure it will be easy to find.
