Romantic restaurant - NYC
Can anyone recommend a great restaurant in NYC for the first night of our honeymoon in July. I'm looking for somewhere with great food and preferably a fantastic view of the city. Not too expensive, but doesn't have to be cheap.
Thanks

Katie,
Unfortunately, to get great views of New York, you probably have to leave it! River Cafe is a great choice.
There's a new restaurant in lower Manhattan called American Park that's right on the water with a great view of the Statue of Liberty - the food is not as great as River Cafe - but the view is fabulous and you can eat outside.
Another possibility is the top of the World Trade Center. I just went to Cellar in the Sky - the food was good, the view was great - but the atmosphere wasn't as romantic ad the main part of the restaurant - Windows on the World. That might be a good choice too.
When you get back to midtown, there's a wonderful bar at the top of the Peninsula Hotel on 55th Street and 5th Avenue - great views!
I haven't been there but the Rainbow Room seems to have re-opened with dinner and dancing.

Unfortunately, just about all the recommendations made--which are excellent choices--are very expensive (by anyone's standards).
So, Katie, since you said, "not too expensive," how about giving us a price range, and perhaps we can give you some recommendations that'll better fill your needs.

Please don't believe what David above says; there is plenty of affordable, good food in NYC, both "ethnic" and otherwise. Romantix restaurants with a view (any with a view) come at a premium, though. At any of those mentioned above, River Cafe is $70 prix fixe, and the others will be at least $50 apiece if not more. Windows... has a pre-theater dinner for $40 if you're willing to eat early. (BTW, Cellar in the Sky has beencalled Wild Blue for a while now.) You could compromise: have a cocktailsomewhere with a view, like Windows on the World or the Peninsula, and then have dinner at a more affordable, neighborhood place that's a bit romantic. I'm sure some locals can think of someplace they know that's intimate.

there is a place in long island city called The Waters Edge. they have a free ferry that crosses over the river from manhattan right to the restaurant. they are pricey, but they may run a midweek special, call them.
for my $$ the ferry ride adds to the fun!
