Robert Treat Hotel in Newark,NJ

Has anyone heard of the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark, NJ? Have an emergency business trip and the customer has put me up there for an early AM in Manhatten. I just want to know if this is a decent hotel? Thank you in advance.

This is an excellent hotel. I have nto personally stayed there but I've been in the public areas and also heard very positive reports about it. There's a fairly good steakhouse called Arthur's on the corner a few doors down. If you are there for dinner it might be worth taking a cab to the Ironbound District (about a $4 cab ride with tip - only a few minutes ride but I wouldn't walk it at night - Ironbound is very safe but you have to walk under a spooky underpass and down a deserted block to get to it from the hotel). Ironbound has some excellent Portuguese and Brazilian restaurants.

Just wanted to clarify - this is not in the class of Waldorf-Astoria et al but it does appear to be an upscale hotel and it's the only hotel I'd stay at in Newark if I needed to stay there. I'm sure it will be okay. They do have an in-house restaurant called Maize that looks very nice but with the food available in Ironbound for far lower price I'd be inclined to go out for dinner. It's also very close to the train station - getting to NYC will be quite simple.

Thank you Owen, I will be leaving there today at 5PM and was just wondering what it was like. I was hoping you would say that it was better than a Holiday Inn. Here is hoping I can get to that resturant tonight before it closes.

Thanks again, I have noticed that you are a great asset to this board.

Rebecca - If you have a chance please report back on how the hotel is - I've been unable to find any reports on-line and it may be a good choice for folks needing to stay overnight prior to Newark airport. If you arrive late I'm guessing that the hotel restaurant and Arthur's don't seat after 9:30 or 10 PM but some of the larger Ironbound places such as Iberia or Iberia Peninsula may be open a bit later.

I said I would give you an updated report on this hotel. It is not what its cut of to be trust me.

The rooms are run down. Very tiny. Hardly any closet space. It was hot in the room with no themostat for air conditioning. The bedspreads are retro looking as is the room.

To ad fuel to the fire on Friday night they rented one of their ball rooms to a promoter for a hip hop night. Needless to say there were at least 30 policemen there and YES< there was a shooting.

The next night they had problems with a flight attendant who had too much to drink roaming the halls trying to find someone who would talk to him.

The hall of the Presidential rooms had torn up carpeting and the roof top floor was dirty with cigar butts. (Maybe Clinton and Monica stayed there)

In summery. Don't go.

Wow... I'm really sorry to hear of your experience Rebecca. Having been in the public areas it certainly appeared (appears) to be a nice older but still upscale hotel. So much for the illusion of a good faceplate (which appears to be just that - an illusion). I hope your business trip was a greater success than the hotel. Next time perhaps you could suggest that they let you book a room through priceline and then reimburse you. I just found out that priceline now allows same day bidding (you can bid and reserve a room on the day you will be arriving).

The trip was great. I stayed in Manhatten as long as possible and stayed clear from the happenings at the hotel. Thanks for the priceline info.

The Hilton Gateway Next to Penn Station Newark is much nicer than The Trent sounds. I too thought th e Trent was a nice place, If you have to go back to Neark stay there.
