In early August the silvers were running in Bird Creek which goes under the Seward Highway. It was very busy with fishermen and made an interesting stop. There are websites devoted to fishing in AK with more information. Here's an interesting link when I googled fishing + Bird Creek + AK that mentions salmon are still running in Bird Creek week of Sept 5-11, 2006 and expected to pick up with falling water levels. Also mentions Ship Creek in Anchorage.

Serious fishermen "follow the fish". The first run is King Salmon, followed by the Reds, and then in the fall is the silvers. You have to take into consideration not just the locations but the dates. Some places have excellent fishing for example in May but nothing in September and vice versa. There are a few places just slightly off the road (short hikes).
