road bicycling in sedona?

I know it's crazy to ask about road cycling in the heart of Mountain Bike Heaven, but does anyone on this board have information on nice long road rides (25-50 miles) around Sedona area? I promise I'll go Mountain biking too.!

The roads in and around Sedona are soemewhat narrow and crowded with local and tourist traffic. Ideally, if you like hill climbs the ride up oak creek is great, but I would not do it becasue of the traffic. The road out of sedona 89A south towards cottonwood is relatively flat, but i'm not sure if there are any shoulders to ride on.

At the end of town on 89A you turn off to go to the Enchantment Resort (i cant remember the name of the road but it is THE way to get to the Enchantment). Its about 5 miles to the resort on a nice wide, not too travelled road. On the way you come to a T intersection, to the left is the Enchantment and you can go right for a few miles too (as I remember). Although it's not 25 or so miles I suppose you can get in 10 or so miles and repeat it. The scenery is great and the grades are fairly level. I would suggest going to a bike shop in town and get their recommendations.
Both on and off the road...hope you have a great time.

Indeed there's road-cycling almost anywhere there are roads. I bicycled thru Sedona on a cross-country trip 12 yr ago. For some on-road climbing there is Jerome to the west, a neat old mining town to visit, and to the east is Oak Creek Canyon ... was that "Sliding Rock Park?" that we stopped at to cool our heels? I rode with an organized tour, but we did not all ride together as a group. I do recall that traffic was a little heavy near Sliding Rock, but if you're a competent cyclist used to traffic I see no reason not to get out there and enjoy the beautiful Southwest.

BTW- check websites like www.bikeleague.org for affiliated clubs in the area you're traveling to. Often you can find a local to show you the sites and off-the-mainstream attractions.

Updating the above: Highway 179 between Sedona and the Village of Oak Creek was reconstructed in 2010 with bike lanes allowing a very scenic 14 mile round trip. Also, if starting in Village of Oak Creek and using Highway 179 into Sedona, then 89A west to Cottonwood (paved shoulder once out of West Sedona), a road cyclist can make a roughly 60 mile round trip. If you take a side trip onto Dry Creek Rd at the west end of West Sedona (toward the Enchantment Resort, as discussed above), you can create a 70+ mile ride, if desired. Despite comments above, this ride is not flat. Also, I would avoid Oak Creek Canyon and the Slide Rock State Park area unless a VERY experienced cyclist who is willing to take risks, as there are no roadway shoulders for most of that area and traffic can be very heavy with motorists who are not familiar with driving around bicyclists. Local bicycle shops can help you refine your route, or contact the Verde Valley Cyclists Coalition at www.vvcc.us or the Coalition of Arizona Bicyclists at www.cazbike.org. Ride safe!

My hubby is a road biker and was kicking himself for not bringing his road bike to Sedona last weekend. There is a nicely paved road with a wide bike lane from Oak Creek to Sedona. From Sedona up through the canyon there is no bike path but for an experienced rider plenty of room on the shoulder and the people drive cars fairly slowly through there. We saw a number of bike riders touring through the canyon and there was room to drive around them. Brought our mountain bikes and really enjoyed riding around Bell Rock area. Have fun be safe!
