Hi topper-

I assume you're relatively new to Fodors since it looks like you just registered today.

It would be helpful if you give us more information what you're looking for, such as:

1) price range
2) cuisine
3) restaurant location (how far would you it to be from where you'll be staying)

These are basic things to start with. I'm sure the folks here are more than happy to help, but we don't know if you're looking for a $100+pp dining experience, or a $7 cheesesteak, or Chinese food, or haute French cuisine.

Anyway, these are some places I like:

Penang in Chinatown
Morimoto - sushi bar for tasting menu
Continental

I just posted a fleshed out version of this question not long ago on Chowhound's website (after doing some research) and got a great response:

http://www.chowhound.com/topics/513954

I've found Chowhound's website very useful for restaurant questions specifically and food questions generally.

I'd also look at such things as the website for this city at Fodor's and Frommer's for other restaurant options. Some also like Zagat's.

$150/couple won't get you the full experience of Le Bec Fin, but you could eat at one of it's less expensive offshoots like Brasserie Perrier or Le Bar Lyonnaise. Fork in Old City is nice.

There are also a ton of excellent, small BYOB restaurants that have fresh, creative menus that won't break the bank (especially since you can pick out a nice bottle from the wine shop at half the cost). Mercado, Django, Matyson are a few that are excellent.

I second Buddakhan.
Also, Le Bec Fin is no longer a fixed price. It is now much more reasonable, but still not inexpensive.

Yes Schmerl, Le Bec Fin is not a fixed menu (unless you choose a tasting menu at dinner for $140 per person), but with average entrees around $35 to $45, once you add the cost for appetizers, dessert, alcohol and a decent tip for 2 people, you are likely well above $150/couple.

Amada, the food is so-so, the service can sometimes be a little disorganized (especially weekends when it's busy).

It's not tapas, but Lolita on 13th Street is great. Another BYOB. Amada has a full bar.

Amada is my favorite restaurant in the world. I don't live in Philly but was actually talking about it last night. Have been to NYC Buddakan and thought it was outstanding as well.

Le Bec Fin has been going down hill since 2001. I don't even go there for lunch anymore. The prices are ridiculous for the bland, unexciting food.

I recommend The Fountain, Swann Cafe, Rouge, Lacroix at the Rittenhouse, Buddakan, Devon Seafood, and Capital Grille on Broad Street.

I also like Ralph's.

Do you have a car? You should try Derek's on Main Street in Manayunk.

All I can say, is that one of my very fave dishes I have ever had, was the Buddakhan's Calamari salad with miso dressing......best thing EVER! Gorgeous atmosphere too! BTW, I alo tried Buddakan in Atlantic city and it was superb too!

Victor's is a South Philly shrine to opera, with servers who deliver arias along with hearty Italian classics. Opened in the 1930s by John Di Stefano

During your dining experience, songs will be sung by both customers and servers. It is a really enjoyable experience. They have a nice menu full of salads, pastas, fish, veal, and chicken dishes. They food is prepared carefully and brought out in a very eye-appealing arrangements. The parking around the building is good. The service is always excellent and going there is always a fun time.

For a cheesesteak I'd recommend Jim's Steaks at 4th and South St.

For a nicer restaurant I believe in your price range we like Tangerine.
