Brotherhood of Thieves, Straight Wharf, Atlantic Cafe, The Tavern ... all places where we were comfy in our shorts and sandals, as our trip was a long casual weekend a couple of years ago. The food was excellent in all places, and the little ones should be fine at any of them. Have fun ... LOVE Nantucket!

If you can find a sitter, we had an excellent meal last weekend at The Boarding House (indoors, unfortunately, as the wait outside was crazy). Also, the lobster roll at Straight Wharf is wonderful - eat outside on the deck. For breakfast/brunch, try Black Eyed Susan's if the wait is not too long. It's a good place to bring the kids as it's very casual for breakfast. No AC, though, so skip it if the weather is hot. Easy Street Cantina (formerly Tacos Tacos) on Steamship Wharf is good for a quick wrap or burrito/taco. We also like Something Natural for lunch - good takeout sandwiches for the beach. Pi Pizzeria is a new pizza place on West Creek Road that has the best pizza on the island (in our opinion) and serves other classic Italian dishes. Also agree with elsiemoo's other recommendations - there is no shortage of good food on Nantucket.

I can say that SFOGLIA was fantastic this summer. So was STRAIGHT WHARF.
If you enjoy martinis at all, I recommend THe BOARDING HOUSE for their 'Number 5' Martini, and THE CLUB CAR'S lemondrop martini!
SHIPS INN Restaurant, which is part of the inn of the same name, is consistently good with excellent service and excellent food. It's on Fair Street.

A midsummer review from Nantucket: simple, family friendly food.
I am not wild about the food at the Tavern, though they are extremely child friendly, but all these places change every season, so the person cooking today may not be there next week. Her replacement may or may not be better.
AC and the Brotherhood are good and child friendly, assuming your kids can behave reasonably (i.e., not getting up and running around.)
On the strip, in addition to Easy Street Cantina, Walters, a deli, has taken the space at the end opposite the ice cream shop. It is the only place on Nantucket where you can get an authentic half sour pickle, and their sandwiches are good.
Sandwiches are not good at Fresh, near the Grand Union parking lot, and Provisions on Straight Wharf, formerly our favorite sandwich place and favorite of all our visitors, was taken over by new managers and is reportedly terrible.
Mid-island, tucked in an alley across from Stop and Shop, is the Hen House, good simple food at all three meals of the day, and a good alternative to the Downyflake for breakfast. Small and can be crowded if you don't go early.
Pi Pizza is delicious. Wood oven, better management than the competition, where my pizza always came twenty minutes later than promised, even when I was told it would take an hour.
AK Diamonds, near the airport, is very popular with locals. Big noisy bar downstairs and a big family friendly restaurant upstairs. Hearty not gourmet.
I am hearing good things about the beach food at Jetties: simple but well handled and a nice place to have a sunset meal.
I am not hearing good things about Chanticleer, once my favorite restaurant in the US. Same owners as Black-eyed Susans, but not a good experience either in service or food, according to friends. I can't eat there. It would break my heart.
Finally, just beyond the rotary on the way to the airport is El Rincon Salvadorano (sorry, no tilde) a very pleasant Salvadoran restaurant with a modest menu both Central American and Mexican food, with some items for the kids. Nice people, good food, very inexpensive, bring your own bottle. Not fast service, so be warned. Interesting combination of American executives and Salvadoran landscapers among the clientele.

Ackislander, thanks for the info on Fresh - we were thinking of trying it but I trust your review. We did get sandwiches at Walters recently which were good but were disappointed in the rolls - we'll try their breads next time. We ate at The Brotherhood last Saturday nite (downstairs) and were quite disappointed - the fries were cold and hard; we had to send back my husband's french onion soup as the soup was cold under the cheesy top. Also, the lobster "dinner" salad was quite skimpy for the price. I'd go to the AC for a casual, child friendly place.
