Most of the recommended places in that area tend to be ethnic rather than "varied." Virgil's for great ribs and bbq, Carmine's for Italian-great for a large group because portions are enormous so good for sharing. Also Trattoria Trecolori for reasonably priced Italian. Ruby Foo's for Asian. Le Madeleine for French.

Joe Allen's has good American food on restaurant row (46 st b/w 8th-9th ave. Burgers, salads, chicken, fish etc.

BTW, all the places I mentioned are in the 40s where Times Square is located, but if you're going to a theater in the 50s there are plenty of places further up.

I would recommend Cafe 1 2 3 on W. 43rd St. Very good food and fun atmosphere. Also a MUST is the Creme Brulee, heavenly.

All the tables have paper tablecloths and crayons, so you can be creative.

Large enough for a group as well.

Have a GREAT time.

For moderate prices and a varied selection, Joe Allen's on West 46th is probably your best choice.
