Restaurants

My wife and I will be visiting NYC for first time in mid July and hear that restaurant prices are quite expensive. Can one and where can one eat on a budget?

The obvious questions:
1. What is your budget?
2. What types of food do you prefer?
3. What area(s) of the city?

New York is one of those wonderful places where you can eat really well cheaply. You can also spend more than your mortgage on a meal. Stick to delis, Chinatown, etc., and you'll do fine. I'm sure others can offer some specifics.

Oh, make sure you check out the Village Voice. They did a "100 Cheapest Places to Eat in New York" article about a month ago. Check www.villagevoice.com.

Darel, splurge ... and spend $11.95 for a Zagat's NYC survey, and first, consult pages 20-22, where you'll see the "top bangs for the buck" and restuarants (including many of the best) offering prix fixe menus for lunch and supper. The index will also give you categories, etc., just what you'll need to weave your way, spending moderately and within your means, through an amazing city with exceptionally good places to eat. You may also visit the Zagat website and see a bit about the NYC. But get the book ... at that price, considering the city you're visiting, it will pay for itself many times over. Enjoy Manhattan!! Ciao

Here's another thought - eat at moderately priced restaurants (there are many in NYC) and have drinks or dessert and coffee at the more expensive, posh restaurants. Also, I completely agree with the above advice -check out Zagat's NYC Restaurant Guide!

Nancy, where do you find these posh restaurants that will take reservations and/or seat you for dessert and coffee only? That's a new one on me! Please enlighten us!
