I am coming to NYC for the first time. I am staying in Times Square area. Any suggestions on restaurants. I want some fun places--not as concerned with prices. I love Italian and American (steaks, burgers) food.

I had a very good meal at an Italian place called Casa di Meglio, 235 W. 48th Street, (212) 582-6577. Make reservations. I wouldn't describe the atmosphere as "fun" but the food was really delicious. Another place with good food and a lighter atmosphere is Osteria del Circo, 120 West 55th Street. I think it is run by the same people as Le Cirque but it's totally different -- more casual and less pricey. It's not technically right in the theater district but it's a short walk. For "American" food I recommend Joe Allen's, 326 W. 46th Street, (212) 581-6464. I see actors that I recognize almost every time I go there. It has good reliable food that is not overpriced, and a convivial atmosphere.

try nocello on W55, it is tremendous!
about $35 w/o liquor.

For Italian food try Osteria al Doge at West 44th between Bway and 6th Ave. Entrees range from $15-25 or so.

Try Un,Deux,Trois.

If money is not an issue definately go to Il Mulino! It's a little (ok a lot) pricey but one of the best meals I've ever eaten.

I agree on Osteria al Doge, but like BECCO on Restaurant Row between 8th and 9th even better. Just be sure to get a reservation. There is also a big noisy but fun restaurant called Carmine's that has opened a location in the theatre district, but I much prefer the original at Broadway and 91st on the Upper West Side. If you have a group, it's a deal, since the portions are HUGE. They don't accept reservations, but the wait at the bar is part of the experience. For a quieter, less Americanized Italian experience, I'd stick with Becco. You might even want to stop in at Don't Tell Mama after dinner to hear some cabaret and soak up the theatrical atmosphere. It's just up the street.

For American, Gallaghers is an institution as a steak house, although I haven't eaten there in years.

The Mezzanine at the Paramount also serves some very nice plates and offers great people watching overlooking the hotel lobby. For drinks, duck in to The Whiskey for a drink (adjacent to the Paramount opposite Dean & DeLuca.)
