Restaurant recommendation in Houston

I am looking for a restaurant that serves good Texan food (I am not sure what is considered Texan food exactly) in Houston area for a Saturday night. I prefer the restaurant to have live music, either Jazz or Country but it is okay if it does not. I am interested in restaurants in downtown or close to it, Galleria, Rice Village, Montrose, and basically that general vicinity.

This is just for a small social get together and is not business related. I have done some research but have not found anything yet.

There really isn't anything I would describe as "Texan food". That could be anything from barbecue to steaks to Tex-Mex. Also, not many restaurants will have live music. What follows are a few ideas:

1. T'afia -- described as "Coastal Mediterranean cuisine inspired by local ingredients". Monica Pope is an excellent Chef, and all ingredients are Texas based.

2. Hickory Hollow -- barbecue restaurant near the Heights. Food is okay. Many Saturday nights will feature local folk musicians.

3. Ouisie's -- Probably would be my first choice based on your description. Southern food by a native Houstonian.

4. Scott Gertner's Sky Bar -- Best known local jazz artist. Not for dinner; drinks before or after.

5. Vic and Anthony's -- one of the few local upscale steakhouses. Has a piano bar for "lounge music". Will be expensive, at leeast $50 - $75 per person.

6. Last Concert Cafe -- Mexican restaurant in a former brothel. Have to knowck on the door to be admitted (part of local charm, no real reason). Features music from local rock bands.

7. Swinging Door -- Meets all your criteria but geography. Out in Richmond, this is a fun road trip. Good barbecue with live country nusic for dancin'.

Hope this helps.

I haven't been here yet since it's brand new, but I would suggest Armadillo Palace. It's owned by Jim Goode, the owner of Goode Company restaurants (that serve awesome and authentic Texas barbeque, Tex-Mex and seafood). Armadillo Palace is to have live music also. It's located on Kirby (just south of the Southwest Freeway) and right next to their barbeque restaurant. It sounds like it's just what you're looking for!

Here's a link to their info: http://www.goodecompany.com/news.asp

How about Dirty's for the biggest chicken fried steak you've ever seen?

Thank you all for the recommendations. Much appreciated. This is a big help.

I will look into all the suggested places one by one on the internet and pick the right one.

LDLee, thanks for the list. It is so interesting that they have changed a brothel to a restaurant
