Restaurant or Bakery That Delivers - In B'ham, AL
My friend's son is in Children's Hospital (has been there a week and the docs won't even discuss discharge yet). The problem is the food is horendous, they tell me. The mom has gotten Captain D's and Burger King and DH brought in Pizza. This kid was raised on sma's southern cooking. They are allowing a regular diet.
Anyone with recommendations ( I need phone #'s as well as names ) of places that will deliver to the hospital.
When I was a student there ( many moons ago ), I remember the food at the main University Hospital was pretty good. We'd go there for lunch sometimes. Is it still good there? How would she get there from Children's?
She is totally unfamiliar with the area and it's been forever since I was up there more than for a day trip for a continuing ed course or two. I think things have changed a BUNCH!
Anyone care to help me find something to send them? Hopefully a meal, but could be a basket of great muffins or such.

Hi, belle!
Hope your friend's son is going to be okay!
There are indeed a few more choices around University Hospital than previously--not a whole lot, but some that are okay, and accessible by internal walkways. There's been a LARGE expansion to the hospital within the last couple of years, and that includes a new food court with places that serve things like chicken fettucine, not really good food but lots better than BK and the like.
Children's runs along 6th Avenue South between 15th Street & 17th Street. To go to the hospital food court, your friend needs to walk out the front of Children's, but then can go right into the UAB hospital complex--the CPM/Spain Rehab bldg is next door on the right. Spain Rehab is easier to go into, and she can take the 2nd-floor walkway toward the large Univ. Hosp. addition (if she goes on the street, she walks east and winds up about 5th Ave S & 19th St).
Signs will get her to the food court, and there's a few other places in view--a Qdoba Grill at street level (1801 4th Ave S--205-715-0147), etc. At 612 22nd St S, there's a really good restaurant called Fish Market (205-322-3330), but she's probably thinking about something more economical for everyday.
As far as delivery to Children's is concerned...
B'ham is not a great town for food delivery, but there are some delivery services--one is called Orderin' Out--
205-437-3338 (I haven't tried them).
One good sandwich shop that I'm pretty sure delivers is called Roly Poly (roll-up sandwiches)--205-933-1933 or 205-324-3393.
Good luck with the meals, and I do hope the son will be all right!

On closer thought, the hospital food court is located more on 6th Ave S between 18th and 19th Streets (at 2nd-floor level)--the hospital's North Pavilion. There's a place that serves homestyle cooking (chicken w/ pasta, meatloaf, etc.), a panini/pasta/pizza place, a dessert place, Starbucks, Chick-Fil-A, etc.
Good luck!

Thanks Smalti!
So if I understand you correctly, your last post only changes this statment [if she goes on the street, she walks east and winds up about 5th Ave S & 19th St).]?
I also called my niece, who lives in Irondale. She recommended a restuarant she painted a mural for a couple years ago. She eats there too. They sound receptive to making an exception based on her knowing them and agreed to make a delivery.
Only thing is they were closed on Sun. So we will try for Monday.
I'll also give my friend your info ...thanks a bunch!
If you think of anything else, please let me know!

That's correct--the food court is a little closer than I first thought. Somewhere I have delivery-service flyers--will keep looking for them, and pass along any info.
If you don't mind, what is the restaurant your niece painted a mural for? They sound nice, and I'll throw 'em my business.

Guiseppes, at 5 Points South. Italian food, I'm told. I've not actually seen the mural.
I may have been there a few years ago, just before she married...I think that's the place, not sure.
