With a ton of other terrific restaurants in New York, I'm just curious as to why your husband would choose Le Colonial.
Fyi, and I don't mean this in a negative way, it is part of a chain - I've been to the one in San Francisco, while there are others in Chicago and Los Angeles. It's a Vietnamese-French sort of fusion with somewhat, some call it tacky, overly dramatic Oriental decor. I found the SF-version food to be just OK, nothing to write home about, good for a quick reservation for taking visiting out-of-towners on business who are clamoring for ethnic restaurant (sort of) while in SF.

I have eaten lunch there. Very nice, good food, interesting decor. I don't think it is the best place to eat in all NYC, but it is better than some. If your husband wants to go there, it's fine. Have a drink, enjoy.

I've had dinner there on several occassions. For a bit, it was the hot spot. But, that was over a dozen years ago. It's a decent, dependable spot, which is implied by the fact that it has lastest.
The food is French-Vietnamese and meant to invoke the era of French Indochina.
Personally, if I were looking for cuisine along those lines, I'd probably opt for Vong. It has been open as long as Le Colonial has, the only difference is that the food has always been more a notch above.
Le Colonial is a nice spot, so don't let my comments imply that it isn't worth a visit.

I really like it but agree it's not the best (but very good) or the trendiest (any more). I personally prefer the more casual upstairs bar area where you can also eat. More interesting and better people watching. Read the reviews
