Here in the US there is a short list of the most popular travel booking websites; Expedia, Travelocity, Orbitz, Hotwire, and Priceline come to mind, along with those run by airlines. There are others, but those are the top ones & are all legit.
Chances are pretty slim you'll find a better deal without any gotchas on any other site.
There are also search engines like kayak.com which are handy for searching, but direct you to other sites for ticket purchasing.

mark99: " I told them I would spread the word if they would not correct my problem" -- ooh - I bet that really scared them.
Millions of people have managed to use PL. But it is a site one should not use w/o a lot of research. PL is not good for every city, and not every PL booking comes out smelling like a rose - but the vast majority are big money savers. BTW - They do have a regular booking side where you don't bid . . . . . .

But this brings up another point.
Priceline may be a bonafide site but it has certain constraints. If you don't know those, you may end up feeling cheated.
For example, if you want two rooms next to each other, or a room for four, or guaranteed nonsmoking, you had best book elsewhere.
On another note: Like the airlines, the hotels all have their own sites which are legitimate. Also, if you call a hotel directly with a rate you found on the Internet, they may match it.
