Reno Update, please.... Peppermill or Silver Legacy (or ???)
I have checked past posts on both of these properties... there's not much recent activity on either.
what we're looking for is just a fun get-away for a few days. we're not really into the casino thing, and would love to find a quiet (but inexpensive...) place either in Reno or on Lake Tahoe. won't have a car, but if we stay in Reno, we'll probably rent one for daytrip to Tahoe. thanks for any ideas you might share - i'm just starting to gather info on this one...

If you are not into casinos then I would seriously look into Tahoe instead of Reno. There is a lot more to do in Tahoe (besides gamble) then Reno. Silver Legacy is nice--we stayed there maybe a year ago. It is your typical casino hotel room. I have never stayed at Peppermill, however they have a FANTASTIC seafood brunch buffet on Sunday mornings. Eldorado has nicer rooms then Silver Legacy but is more $$.
Look into Lake Tahoe--many of the hotels/casinos on Hwy. 50 can be found for dencent rates (or through Priceline/Hotwire). Caesar's in Tahoe has nice rooms with the sunken round jacuzzi tubs. Harvey's is also nice if you can get a good rate on it.
I love Reno for the gambling, but would never go there for any other reason.

For a few days, I would definitely go to Lake Tahoe. It's beautiful, clean, and feels more enjoyable fun get-away. Although this isn't a small place, you might like to check out Cal-Neva Resort, with it's activities, spa, all rooms with a lake view, etc. You might check to see if they have a transportation shuttle to Reno.

If you stay in Reno, the best place to stay is downtown, therefore I would advise the Silver Legacy. It's a nice hotel and is directly connected to the Eldorado and Circus Circus. If you are not into the casino thing, you can always walk around the downtown, along the Truckee River walk, go to the National Automobile Museum, Nevada Art Museum, or see the Fleishmann Planetarium at the University of Nevada Reno. There are plenty of golf courses in the area. Virginia City is also another nice side trip. In front of teh Harrahs they normally have outdoor concerts on the plaza. If you will be in Reno during August, Hot August Nights classic car show is going on August 3-10.
