Remember that "funny" question about a/c in SF hotels???
Not so funny now--it's been 114 for two days and expected to continue through the week. I know Stevie Wonder is playing tonight in my town, but it's too DANG HOT!!!!

Actually, it is cooler in SF--but here in the East Bay it's been scorching. It is actually predicted to be 114 (no, that's not a typo--just came across the radio) for tomorrow. Temps across the BAy can vary from 10 degrees to Oakland to 20 degrees more here in the East Bay.

It's always cooler in SF and your title should be changed. Regarding Concord:

TTess, I'm on the Clayton side and have a thermometer in the shade in my backyard with an additional indoor/outdoor digital (also in the shade); it did indeed hit 104 today in the shade. My "teasing" was that a while back when folks were asking about a/c in SF hotels the common response was "it isn't necessary". I'm pretty sure a room with a big window facing the Bay would get rather warm under these conditions. We're under extreme heat advisory out here and cooling centers have had to open. In addition to being on fire watch.

TrvlMaven, I understand your "joke". My hubby and I were in CA in August (either '94 or '95..can't remember exactly), and it was high 80's & sunny every day......we traveled the coast from Carmel to Trinidad/Patrick's Point, and it was SOOOOO hot! so we were dying in a few of our B&B's that didn't have a/c.......we have a place in Mendocino this year with no a/c, and I'm nervous!!! I don't mind the heat so much, but my husband has a REAL problem with it....keeping our fingers crossed!

No one knows what will happen--but right now air quality is also an issue up and down the state with all of the fires. This has been an early year for this high of heat. Our local talk radio station has been discussing "how to keep cool" tips for the past hour.

In the southern end of the Sacramento Valley it got up to 112 degrees. It is now at close to midnight 90 degrees. Our county called an emergency and cooling centers were opened up. I would imagine TrvlMaven there in Concord you got above 104 degrees. It is HOT and yes smokey air although not as bad (at least here) as yesterday.

Probably due to the weather, and I'm not alone in this at work, allergies are acting up all this week.
On TV they've mentioned rolling black-outs.
"Spare the air" days are announced, but without free rides who is doing anything? Oh, well, if I'd have a house I'd probably conserve water and electricity, but in my apartment it's all to the minimum all year (no A/C).
Luckily, our windows are to 2 sides, so cool wind is never a problem.

The diversity of the weather here always makes it difficult to advise travelers--if you are here during a heat spell, you will wonder why people say it is cold in SF. If you think it will only be sunny and warm and the fog rolls in, you will be miserable. I don't think anyone who responds to inquires about SF weather is being misleading--it is just difficult to predict and it has been very unusual this spring and summer.
To those of you who are not familiar with the San Francisco Bay Area, trvlmaven is referring to her town in the east bay NOT San Francisco. In the summer there are often scorching temperatures in areas surrounding SF. The weather forecasters here usually give 3 temperature averages--inland (the east, north and south bay areas); bayside (eastside of SF, Berkley, Oakland); and the coast--westside of SF, Pacific) The inland temperatures can be 30 degrees higher and they remain high into the night. Rarely do daytime highs in SF remain so into the night and rarely do SF temperatures remain high in the daytime for more than a couple of days--especially when it reaches the 100's in the east bay.

Note that "bayside" temperatures also include the Peninsula, east of the hills that separate the coast from the bay. So, yesterday at lunchtime in SF, it was 83 degrees (at the Embarcadero). When I left for home at 4:45, it was 74 degrees. When I got to Burlingame ("bayside") it was 86 degrees.

It's been hot but not terrible in San Francisco the last few days. There was a definite breeze off the ocean last night. The heat spell we had around June 19 and 20 of this year was way hotter in the city proper. I remember going to a movie and asking first if the theatre was air-conditioned - that's something I normally don't even think about here.
