I don't remember anymore, but I'm not one to spend a lot of extra money when there are comparable alternatives out there. It's a great deal because it is guarded and covered -- a huge underground parking lot.

I pretty much parked my car and only took it out a couple of times to go to Home Depot or whatever.

Now that I know this about that particular hotel, I would not hesitate to ask for the same deal at other hotels when traveling. It's unexpected revenue for the parking department.

I'm back and shamelessly topping my post...my husband found a new job, a much better one in fact, and was only out of work until last May. We feel very fortunate!

Soooo, now fast forward to today and we owe the girls that DC trip. We are planning to drive up (from ATL) for their Sprng Break unless I can snag some cheap airfare. We were so impressed with Airbnb's customer service last year that I booked through them. I've contacted our Senator to secure tour tickets...

I'm guessing the recs up post still hold true, but if you're reading this far and want to add anything,I won't mind. ��

Debating on taking the kids to the Holocaust Museum--too emotionally hard for 10 yos?? They have learned a little about WWII and killing of the Jews but we haven't gone deep into it...

One new musuem that you might want to try and get tickets for is the African American https://nmaahc.si.edu/visit/passes. It opened in Septemeber and its been very popular. TImed tickets are needed.

I think your kids are on the cusp of being old enough but you know them best.

Mine at 10, not emotionally ready. Better experience at 12.

There is a young people's exhibition at the museum called Daniel's Story (based on the Carol Matas novel for ages 9-14).

At busier times of the year like Spring Break, timed (free) tickets are required for the main part of the museum. Not sure about Daniel's Story.

Right next to the Holocaust museum is the Forest Service Visitor Center. It is a brick building which looks out of place among all that marble. Stop in to see Smokey Bear's desk.
If you can't get cheap airfare, your other option would be to ride Amtrak to Union station in Washington. Union station is on top of a big Metro station.
If you fly, fly to Reagan National (not Dulles).
Reagan national has its own Metro stop.

Dig deeper. There was far more killing during the Holocaust then the "killing of the Jews" Teach them the full history and not just the Jewish perspective. I find it disturbing that people actually believed the Holocaust never happened. I am equally disturbed that many people of Jewish decent believe that their tribe was the only targeted.

The question is about travel and the appropriate age of children for visiting a place dedicated to memorializing all lives lost during the Holocaust. You are calling out the OP in a way that is both hostile and unnecessary.

On the Holocaust museum and the age, it obviously depends upon the emotional maturity of your children. Outside of the Daniel's exhibit I would find the museum disturbing for 10 yr olds. Kids who have been exposed to the history and have been brought along concerning the war and the holocaust age approriately to the history would probably be ok. I didn't get that sense from your post.

What you are and aren't disturbed about is irrelevant to the OP's decision make a family trip to a museum. You are looking to pick a fight where it is both unnecessary and inappropriate on a travel forum.

Thanks, sf7307, it was an unfortunate overlap using the word "disturbed." I agree with yestravel that it's about individual children and their ability to process a difficult, complex and horrific topic.

OWJ, I truly doubt you are offended in anyway. You mentioned what you mentioned. I have many Jewish friends of a multitude of generations that were raised with a singular history and had no idea that millions of non jews were also victims of the genocide of the Holocaust until they were grown adults. Generations just dismissed that truth. To me, I would be remiss to not speak up to your words of 'the killing of the Jews" No ill intent whatsoever.

Ina--I'm an educated adult. I'm a social studies teacher. I know the facts, and quite frankly, as OBX noted, I did find the tone of your first post snarky. My kids know Jews were the single largest target. They know about the yellow stars. They know a hate extended beyond the Jews. Did I need to spell that out in my post? I didn't ask HOW or WHAT to teach about the Holocaust. I asked if my kids were too young for the museum. I figured posters would share how their kids did and what age they took them. 'K?

OBX, Yes, SF and Tom--Thank you for your help. We'll be staying on Capitol Hill, a few min walk from Eastern Market Metro Stop. We're going with my BFF and her 10yo daughter and need 3BR. My cousin didn't trust my judgement or the 90+ pos reviews so he checked out the listing. He gave it his approval. LOL. It even has off street parking!

I'm going to order the Carol Matas novel and Number the Stars. I'll read those with the kids and see how they do before making up my mind about the museum. DC certainly has plenty of other great places to visit if we don't do it this visit.

Thank you for addressing me OWJ and please consider my deepest apologies. I never meant to marginalize and come off snarky just as you never meant to marginalize that it wasn't just the jews that were targeted. Even though you just kind of did.

If you ever come to Boston, be sure to visit the Holocaust Memorial which are glass towers with prisoner numbers and vapor from the subway system representing the gas chambers. It is a very powerful place for me to walk thru anytime I am in the area or being a tour guide to friends and family.
