Going to the parade here on the Kenai is a favorite tradition, along with summer air shows(ours was cancelled to save money unfortunately).
I guess just as entertaining and amusing as the parade displays is the amount of tattoos revealed on people who dig out their tank tops. I've seen a few "Gals" who might fit right in the Ripley's museum.
I like the classic car collection, someday, I hope to have one of my own and drive it in the parade.

CANDY,,,,,,wait a minute you got CANDY? GEEZ did we get gipped. Loud band, lots of politicians, the Girl Scouts, the Boy Scouts, lots of flags but NO CANDY, lol.

Hope everyone has a great 4th, and lets all pray that our soldiers come home sooner, very sooner, from the wars in Iraq and Afganistan.

Peace.

Hey Dorgal--my son's scout troop won third place for their float in the Quincy parade last year! He was supposed to ride on it, but when the snow postponed the parade to the following weekend, we had a prior commitment. But I spent quite a few Saturdays working on that float! It was a train with characters from various holiday songs--do you remember it per chance?

One of the reasons we choose to go to Kaua`i in late July is because the Koloa Plantation Days parade and celebration. It has become a bit of a tradtion for us. As a tourist who appreciates Kaua`i's sense of community and "small town" feel, it feels great and is great fun to take part in a local event with island residents.

Both my hometown suburb in IL and my little town in MI do this. In MI there were kids on scooters and skateboards too.

This last week in MI was so outstanding I'm going back in two days. We also had a boat parade at night on the lake with music and it was the best one I have ever seen. Some people in kayaks and canoes even joined to the rear. The fireworks were beyond awesome. What a tremendous 4th it was. Smalltown America is still with us, and sometimes not just in the very small town. My suburb has almost 85,000 and we do the same, just as described and have movies and games in the parks at night, as well.

JJ5 where were you in MI? I live in MI also and we have the same thing! I was going to reply that in addition to the parade we have the lake fireworks as well. The first weekend of August we have a 5/10K run, kids run, Boat parade, chicken broil with live band, and lots of fun for the kids!

Nope, not in my neighborhood growing up. The neighborhood I grew up in had a lot of traffic (cut through). I remember once about 10 years ago seeing a story on the local news about parents upset their kids couldn't ride bicyles in the street. I had a good laugh about that because who would want their kids to ride bicyles in the street, must not love the kids, etc. In my neighborhood, you would have died riding a bicycle in the street. Then I moved to a new subdivision. Now I understand what the person was saying. Culs-de-sac and limited traffic. Perfect places for kids to play.

The neighborhood across from mine does the kids parade.

cfntmpn, I was at Big Fish Lake near Marcellus, MI. It's in SW Michigan off of 40. We are actually about 1/2 way between Lawton and Marcellus and I do things in both towns- but Marcellus had great doings for the 4th. The boat parade was on our lake which is connected to Finch and Saddlebags (East and West) so that we had lots of pontoons etc. You could see fireworks coming in from Lawton at the same time.
The biggest towns near us are all to the North (Kalamazoo, Portage, Grand Rapids).

Kids ride their bikes all over. Horses too, and occasionally scooters that are outlawed where I live in IL. I rode a bike between Finch and Big Fish and back this weekend and also swam like crazy. It was the most active week in about 5 years. LOVED IT! I've had my house for 3 years now and love it so much! Small town America is "visitable" in all directions from us. We visit about 10 towns regularly and they all stop on Friday nights in the Fall for the HS football game. Literally close the main street for a time. Stores are open from 9 to 5 for the most part, and kids can play just about anywhere and have great street sense and machinery knowledge, IMHO.

They often carry your groceries to the car for you if desired. It's a totally different way of life than suburb or BIG City. People talk to you and things take a lot more time. It took us over 3 months to get an address for a pole barn. But we know all the people with a key to the Village Hall now. LOL!!We are about 18 miles from Paw Paw (South) and we are surrounded by Michigan wet lands, about 18 other lakes, vineyards and blueberry fields.

I love MICHIGAN. I LOVE small town America. For a girl who grew up in prime Southside Chicago and worked downtown for years, it's a little slow but wonderfully giving and more human than city living.

We have all of the above in IL as well, but it is fast, furious and it takes a couple of hours just to get home afterwards. We live in traffic grid-lock. In MI during the busiest times, you can drive 3 miles at a time without even seeing another car. But you got to watch for deer and other wildlife diligently. We had one large doe come up to the car at a Stop sign and siddle up to the side door. I waited until she was ready to jump a creek before I went again. They get spooked and you don't know which way they will run.

My neighborhood, Naglee Park in San Jose (next to Downtown) has a Mayberry style parade every year. More people in the parade than watching it. This year we got Fourth of July candy for the kids to toss (love Oriental Trading Company) but unfortunately all of the kids to toss candy to were in the parade as well! So we stopped at the end and tossed into the parade for the kids that were behind us. This is followed by a huge block party with live music and a bounce house in the park. Too fun!

you can get that in Irvington VA. i was just there this weekend and that is exactly what we did on the 4th. there was the bike brigade of town kids, with red white and blue streamers

family equestrians, the fire trucks, this parade featured area antique cars, every convertible in the county must have been used for the local politicians!

the night before was the airforce band! total americana.
