Until JanetKMR mentioned it, I had forgotten what a great place Richmond is. DH and I seriously considered moving there, but wanted to be closer to DD.
OP, check it out.

Hi LilahAB,

As Denisea says in the above conversation, ATLANTA & North Carolina are amazing places. One of my friend is living over there he always says great things about ATLANTA & North Carolina. So I would like to recommend you for small vacations just visit there and get to know how this place is.. accordingly you can stay there.

If you are a clinician, sign up with a temporary agency and do a few contracts in different places. There is plenty of need!

Just sayin', folks, not being critical, it's a matter of taste and all that, you couldn't get me to live in Atlanta or Charlotte for all the money in the world. But that doesn't mean the OP shouldn't. Or you.

Now that we know you are not really looking for a place to "live" but taking a life trip through a great part of the country while working, lots can be offered--which sort of speaks to Ack's not wanting to "live" a couple of places!!
I will say that charlotte has some lovely accessible suburban towns--Davidson, Mooresville, even Fort Mill in SC.
So, stick a pin in it and go!! LOL

Re what Ack said, I accepted a job working the Carolinas with the understanding I would move there in the next year. With a travel job, it really didn't matter much where I actually lived. It fit in my plan to have a mountain place and a home near the beach. When it became clear that the misogynist boss decided that I should live in Charlotte and not elsewhere in SC/NC I moved on to another job. I know lots of folks love Charlotte but it wasn't what I was looking for. If I were the OP I would scour online want ads for the mountain communities. Highlands NC, Brevard, Asheville, etc. unless the beach areas are really calling her. The in-between areas of the coastal plain and piedmont can be brutal with heat and humidity. Go high or near the beach for the best weather.

I wouldn't live in Charlotte either....I lived in NE North Carolina for 5 years and definitely would not recommend it to anyone under the age of 70.

I adore Richmond (which is no secret for those who read my posts)...we have great restaurants, good medical/hospital/doctors, short drive to the mountains or the beach, all four seasons, friendly people, and without the traffic nightmares of many places.

Charleston is, IMO, a great place in many ways (restaurants, architecture, history, friendly people) and terrible in others (heat, humidity, traffic, humidity, accessibility, heat, humidity).

What on earth does NE North Carolina have to do with Charlotte? Last time I looked at a map Charlotte was about as far south as you can get without leaving the state. Plus, Charlotte, like Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro et al is a CITY. There are no cities in the NE.

Your comment makes as much sense as saying you won't live in Richmond because you previously lived in SW Virginia.

The two aren't connected. My reasoning behind Charlotte has nothing to do with my experience living in NE NC....sorry if I wasn't clear.

Seemed that way to me too!
Charlotte is really a lovely city--not one of these people have been here for a long time--OR as a young person.

But it is NOT the "deep south", nor is Atlanta, nor the Triangle for the most part. It's pretty hard to tell "what" the OP might like since she has never been down this way, as we are wont to say.

Greenville, SC is a wonderful town--lots of pluses.

The only advice worth offering. Don't work harder at the OP's life than the OP does.

Something doesn't pass the whiff test about this.

Possibly relevant clip from today's Raleigh N&O:

"It is easy to forget that Charlotte is now larger than Detroit, Seattle, Denver or Boston, and that Raleigh is now larger than Miami, Minneapolis, Cleveland or New Orleans."

Does a city the size of Seattle or Cleveland fit the OP's probably romanticized idea of the "Deep South"? I suspect not.

"But it is NOT the "deep south", nor is Atlanta,..."
"OP's probably romanticized idea of the "Deep South"?"

I think there must be different definitions of "deep south" being used. Mine is not "romanticized" but geographic.

How anyone can say that Atlanta is not in the deep south?
That's just bizarre.

thursdaysd, aren't you the one who hates living where you live and won't go outside the door in the summer? There's someone who posted how miserable it is to even walk to the mailbox in the summer. I thought that was you. If I'm mistaken, my apologies.

It may be, but there is something about Charlotte that has been true for many years. It is a large city that doesn't "feel" large. I can be downtown in 20 minutes--10 from my former home.
I can be at either of two power lakes in 40 minutes. I can be in the mountains in 2 hours and at the beach in 3.5.
The medical care is without peer. The weather is terrific although it doesn't snow quite enough for our likes (true!!).
Y'all come now!! LOL

@starrs - where do you see me recommending that the OP move to the south without experiencing summer here?

In fewer than 24 months the OP allegedly moved to Chicago, then Boston and now possibly wants to relocate to a nebulous place called the Deep South.

He/she doesn't know if they want big or small, city or suburb, nor does he /she particularly seem to care what they do when they get there in the next six weeks.

People are generously offering thoughtful advice to a person who apparently hasn't bothered to do a single thing other than hit return after posting a couple of really uninformed questions.

Let's face it: some of the people generously offering thoughtful advice are perfectly capable of conversing with only themselves. Their decision to post has nothing to do with the likelihood of a response from the OP.

@thursdaysd - your comments directed to Janet just seemed strange. If I am following correctly, you are recommending a place after sharing here for years how much you hate living there. I live further south (in the piedmont) than I ever expected to live. But I'm not recommending my area to the OP.

Maybe she'll return, obxgirl. If so, there will be some suggestions waiting for her. It's been less than 48 hours since she posted.

I did not recommend moving to Charlotte. I do not recommend moving to Charlotte without first visiting it in the summer. I said that there was no reason to recommend against a move to Charlotte based on living in NE NC and complaining about the effective age of the inhabitants. Janet said that was not the intent of her post, but I was not the only one who read it that way.

Since the OP appeared to have abandoned this thread I did not consider that I was addressing her in any case.
