I'm going to second jent103's request for feedback from Gretchen about her comments about Nashville. I can't keep all my facts straight, but I sort of felt that trvlgirlmq's comments about divide was more about The Temple than Nashville society. I have old money and new money friends there and wasn't there a divide going on a few years ago? I can't remember what I was told! I have a friend in addition to a former client/friend who are both members who really want me to join. Good for biz. I'm a sole proprietor who works with teenagers, and I will be the only Jewish person in TN who does what I do so apparently that helps.

Sure, there is probably an old money vs. new money thing, but there is also that in my Connecticut hometown. It's all relative. In all honesty, I could care less about that stuff, and if someone does not like me because of my religion or where I am from then that's their loss. I've met some people in Nashville who I like quite a bit but yet they LOVE Trump. I would rather stick needles in my eyes than deal with that, but we manage to co-exist.

Gretchen, would love the feedback. I spent a lot of time in Charlotte for personal reasons from 2013-2014, and I found it quite different from Nashville. Beautiful cities both, but different.

Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving to y'all.

Skiergirl - Yes, my comments on any financial divide had only to do with the Temple. I actually don't even live IN Nashville but a northern area suburb (Hendersonville).

I feel the same way that if someone wants to look down on me for lack of money, education or my personal religion/lifestyle then that is their problem. My mom is a nanny for wealthy people and they treat her like crap much of the time. She's not a person with a life outside of her role with them.

Off Topic -
The Temple had a BIG kerfuffle a few years ago when the senior rabbi and board decided not to renew the contract of our long-time Cantor. They did it in a very secretive way and there was no recourse for the membership and we were not involved at all. They also, at the same time, decided not to extend our religious school director's contract when it ended a year after the Cantor. They are a married couple who had been with the clergy/staff for almost 30 years. Many members left for this reason and moved to Congregation Micah (the only other Reform temple) and West End Synagogue (Conservative). The entire religious school staff including myself, my mom and my sister left when our director was forced out. My youngest DS still wanted to attend services there but did not want to study for his bar Mitzvah with the new Cantor/religious school staff. Just some history from my perspective!

I'm not going to belabor it. We have friends in Nashville and DH did some education at VAndy. It doesn't mean people don't get along.
I would say the same thing about Winston Salem. It is something we have always appreciated about Charlotte not being so class concisous.
AND everyone can certainly make their own way.

I think "I'm not going to belabor it" is your way of saying your thoughts are right and the rest of us are not wrong, but you always seem to have to prove your point as being the right point to have. Can dish it out but not take it. Seen it on your other posts when someone dares to say something not entirely positive about CLT.

Everywhere is class conscious, including Charlotte. I have friends there just like you do in Nashville. I've spent a considerable amount of time there in the past two years as well. It's class conscious, trust me.

And I also went to Vanderbilt. So I guess I know as much as your husband. Or in your head probably not.

Thanks trvlgirlmq for the inside info! My friends who belong there told me the same. Too bad.

OK. If that is what you want to make of it, I am fine. I just don't think it deserves this much attention. All I said was in response to the synagogue, it might be true of more than that. Nothing more, nothing less.
We have had connections in Nashville and at older ages than maybe college.
Come to Charlotte for a vibrant Jewish community of total givers and no problem mingling with the hoy palloy.
PLEASE don't blow this into something it isn't. I could care less if you agree with ANY of my opinions, since you seem to know so much about me.
Bring it on about Charlotte--I see its good and its bad.

Hi, I live in Western North Carolina. I personally love it here because I can enjoy the changing seasons. The Smokey Mountains are beautiful and peaceful. The weather is mild, it doesn't get too hot or too cold. We do get snow in the winter, but usually not too much. It is a great place to raise a family, with little crime compared to some places. Asheville, NC is where all the malls and major shopping is. This is more of the artsy area. Land and housing prices vary depending on the county. If you are looking for more land for your buck, I would recommend Tennessee. I couldn't say specifically where in Tennessee. But I have done some research on land and home prices there, and I was blown away how cheap you can get acres of land with a nice home. I hope this has helped and good luck!

Hi L,

I assume that you are about 20, footloose and fancy free.

Otherwise, you are in for a big shock.

The South is a very different country.

I suggest that you visit before you make a permanent move.

Of the places you've listed, I suggest New Orleans.
