Relocating to Princeton, NJ
Considering moving back to Princeton after being "elsewhere" for 11 years! I am in my late 20s and unsure of what the area is like now--other than a quick visit and a high school reunion or two, I haven't spent a whole lot of time there.
Wondering what the housing market is like, specifically, will I have an impossible time finding a home for myself, two friends (and here's the kicker part)---my small dog and cat? I've found many areas are becoming increasing less pet-friendly for rentals...is Princeton the same? What kind of rents will I find for houses & apartments? Any suggestions WHERE to find them?
I'm in human services...how's the job market in the area?
Finally, what can I expect to find for fun? I know of some of the bars that have been there since the dawn of time (the Ivy, JB Winberries)...anything new and exciting?
I know, people hate relocation questions...but nonetheless, any real advice is welcomed!

Princeton has a lot of traffic lately but all and all I think the area has many advantages. Personally, I don't think it has changed too much in eleven years but then I can be oblivious to things that drive other people crazy. Your questions are very broad. I would begin by calling the Princeton Packet(local newspaper) and getting a subscription. Weichert Realtors is on Nassau Street and you can ask about rentals. I would not get discouraged about pets. I know in previous years I had to track down places but it always worked out. There are lovely towns right outside of Princeton and rentals will probably be cheaper. As I'm sure you know Human Service salaries can be the pits but there are as many jobs here as probably anywhere else. There is plenty to do in every direction. There are always compromises where one lives but I love it here for now.

Wow! I was just wondering the same thing about Princeton. It's on my list of possible relocations.
I found the Packet website, which is helpful to an extent. I guess I'm looking more for the "feel" of the town that I wouldn't be able to get by visiting for a weekend. Is it friendly? Is housing expensive? Is there much for a 30 year old to do? It seems to be 45 minutes-hour away from the closest beach, but using Mapquest...who knows if that's right!!
I know the surrounding areas of NJ are hectic...but Princeton runs a little slower, right? I hope to be working in Princeton if I move there....I'm from a relatively rural area (by comparison to NJ) and I think some amount of solace is necessary!!
Thanks in advance!

Molly, I worked in Trenton and lived in Middlesex County. Right now, Central Jersey is very expensive to live in, housing wise. Expect to pay more than $1000 per month for a one bedroom apartment in the Princeton area. Even in the immediate area outside Princeton area, don't expect to pay too much less than that. I would suggest landing a job first before moving to NJ. You can goto www.nj.com to look through the classified ads from the Star Ledger or Trenton Times for apartments.
There is a lot to do in Princeton. The Unoversity is there; therefore, the small shops generate a lot of traffic. Many businesses cater to the university crowd. It is fun to walk around the university area and browsing through the small shops on Rt. 27. Hope this help.
