Regent Hotel New York
I will be in New York over a weekend in Jan 2001, and considering the Regent Hotel on Wall Street since I think it is offering a good weekend rate. I will be concentrating on downtown sightseeing. However I heard that the financial district is very quiet in the weekend, is it safe to stay here?

Hi Alyssa:
That hotel is strictly business only--I guess that's why they are offering the weekend rate. There really is not too much going on there over the weekend in that part of town it is safe to stay there.
What rate are they offering? Except for daytime stuff like WTC and Staten Island Ferry there is not much going on downtown especially in the evening.

Hi Alyssa:
From a map I looked at they are walkable. Walk straight up Broadway. Both are easily accessible by subway. #2 (there's a stop at Wall Street)go 3 stops. or take the J at Broad Street and go 3 stops. That put you right in the heart of Chinatown--Little Italy is a short stroll away Those subways are all very busy 24 hours a day so don't be too concerned about no one around if you need directions. MTA has a website www.mta.nyc.ny.us. It has maps and information you can use.
Take a cab in the evenings if the subway stations seem too far away from the Hotel. I think you'll be fine. Have a great time! Welcome to NYC.

The Regent is worth the money, if you don't mind the area basically being dead on the weekend. There are actually some good restaurants in the area, including the one in the hotel. There are at least two subway lines that stop within 3 blocks of the hotel.
It is on Broad Street, which is actually the same street as the Stock exchange and some of the major banks. You could walk to Battery Park City and the City Hall Area, which is near chinatown. However, be aware that even native New Yorkers get confused by all the curving and slanted streets downtown; you can easily get lost if you don't carry a map. I am sure that the Regent supplies them, though!
