Lower East Side Hotels??

My husband and I (two 20-somethings) are planning to spend a couple of days in New York City in later January or early Febuary. We would love to stay on the Lower East Side maybe in a B&B, but we're having trouble finding something. Our budget is $150 to $200 per night? Any suggestions? Would this be a fun area to stay in? (Note: We live in Wicker Park in Chicago so we're not scared of big cities!)

Amy I don't know of any hotels on the Lower East Side that you would want to stay in. Do you mean South of Canal St? On the east side that is not one of the better neighborhoods, good shopping there though on Sunday on Orchard St.

If you mean the east side say in the thirties on down there are a couple I would recommend.

Try the Murray Hill, it's a B&B in the east 30's and is cute and not very expensive. There is also a Day's Inn on Lex and Howard Johnson's at 29th and Park Ave.

A little further down on Gramercy Park is the Gramercy Hotel, nice location close to transportation, restaurants and the Park is very pretty.

Have a fun time here.

There is an area just off the Delancey Street and Houston Street areas east of the Bowery on the lower east side (LES) that is hopping at night, particularly for 20-somethings. Lots of bars and clubs with some restaurants mixed in. It is a commercial and residential area and the few hotels that exist in that area are more or less flop-houses - not a place you'd want to stay. that said, the Gramercy area is a good suggestion and there are a few in Soho that are relatively close to LES by cab (as is the Gramercy area). Your budget might just squeeze you into one of the Schrager SoHO properties if they run a winter special and would definitely get you into the Gramercy at that time of year. Therare lots of great places to eat, drink, shop and hang out in the Village, Gramercy/Union Square area and in SoHo - either locationis a good choice.

i second owen's post. the lower east side is definately the place for good entertainment, but not the place to find a hotel. there are two small hotels in greenwhich village worth investigating. one is the washington hotel (or maybe washington irving). its located on washington square just north of the park. the other is the larchmont on west 11th street. my information is about three years old, but i used to work in the area and they were good alternatives at that time. both are small, older hotels not as glamourous as anything in soho. there is also a service called "bed and breakfast new york". friends of mine from sfo have used the service and were pleased with their accomodations. a couple of great music venues are the bowery bar (rock), mercury lounge (rock), arlene's grocery (folk) and tonic (jazz). there's a wonderful restaurant called deanna's on rivington street. the owner sometimes sings for the crowd. the orensanz center is a performance space featuring music and theatre in and old synagogue. happy trails!

Thanks everyone for your help. Unfortunately, the Grammercy Hotel was booked--so I'm looking for something else in that area.
NYC native--do you have any more info. on that B&B? I'd love to check it out.
Phyllis--The Washington Square Hotel has a vanacy (it's located at 103 Waverly PL in Greenwich Village). Would that be a good area? On the map, it looks close to the East Village and the Lower East Side, but is it really?
Thanks again!

The Murray Hill has a website www.murrayhillinn.com Phone 212-683-6900 .
The Washington Square is a better location for what you are looking for.
Have a good time in NYC!

greenwhich village is an older version of what the lower east side is today. it used to be the center of the bohemian universe, but lately its become very gentrified. New York University seems to own everything in sight and the cheap clothing stores and "head shops" on 8th street are now the gap and starbucks. (some people think thats an improvement. but as far as location goes, you will be within walking distance of the east and west village, and there are still good clubs and restaurants in the immediate vicinity of the hotel. the rule of thumb in new york is 20 street blocks to the mile or 10 avenues (the walk from 4th street to 14th street is 1/2 mile but the distance from 1st avenue to 5th avenue is also 1/2 mile. 5th avenue generally divides streets into east/west.
its no more than a 20-30 minute walk from washington square park to the bowery and delancy or from the far end of the west village to the hotel.
my only concern would be street noise, since it a neighborhood with such an active night life. i would ask the hotel about how much street noise filters into the rooms. as far as the immediate neighborhood, washington square park is fairly safe. during the day its filled with students and musicians (and panhandlers). smalls is a good jazz club, kenny's castaways is an old folk/rock establishment. the amato opera house on the bowery is the most inexpensive way i know to hear great opera.
on bleecker street, which is a main east/west street , just off laguardia place is a tavern (i don't remember the name) that is known for serving hundreds of different beer varieties. il mulino is an expensive but good italian restaurant, la boheme is a romantic french restaurant, minetta place tavern is also nice. there are so many good restaurants in every price range.
once you arrive in nyc, you can pick up either the new york press or the village voice, both free street newspapers. you will find listings for many small theatre groups, performance spaces, and clubs. many of them are reasonably priced and the quality of work can be excellent. (it can also be horrible, but if you only spent $10, what the heck).
i noticed someone recommended off soho suites. i see them advertise all the time, although i don't know anyone who has stayed there. you should be aware that this part of the lower east side changes dramatically block by block. around the corner from the hotel are real bowery flophouses and the park on the other side has some serious drug activity after dark. on the other hand a trendy restaurant just opened one block north of the hotel and the bowery bar, a great club, is two blocks away. you may want to think about your comfort level with such a transitional neighborhood. you can email me directly if you have more questions about restaurants or nightlife.
