We spend lots of weekends in San Francisco during the year because 1) we have season theatre tickets and 2) we love the City.
We prefer to stay around the Union Square area, which is, coincidentally, a couple of blocks from the theatre district, but also near the cable cars and BART and the MUNI for transportation around the city. Also for shopping, if that interests you...Macy's, Nordstrom's, etc. within walking distance.
If you will be renting a car try to avoid getting it until you are ready to go to Kenwood. You don't need one in the City and parking is outrageous. Public transportation in San Francisco is very good. Go to a newsstand and
If you are flying in you can take BART from the airport to the Powell Street Station, just a couple of blocks from the Square.
I often use hotelres.com to book a hotel, because they are 'contract' booking agents (meaning a discount, they specialize in San Francisco and the Silicon Valley only.
If you use hotelres.com and choose the Union Square area, these are hotels I can recommend because we have stayed in them. Some of them may not have special rates at the time you are there, however. If you are lucky a good rate may be found at the Pan Pacific. Outstanding. We like the Nikko, too, but it has become to pricey for us. In no particular order....The Chancellor, King George, Cartwright, Andrews, Canterbury.....Actually, the last three times we have stayed at the Donatello, because we have to drive into town and they have a 'parking package'. But they also have very large rooms, with a wet bar and small refrigerator, coffee and tea-making facilities, and a small microwave. They do a free continental breakfast at the top of the hotel with a terrace and a fireplace.
The list of hotels I gave you includes some very small ones and some very large ones, but I think you would be happy in any one of them.
OH...if you use hotelres.com, Union Square area, and come up with a good rate at the Mark Twain...I would pass it. OK hotel, but right on the edge of an undesireable area.

Thank you.....I was on AmEx travel today and looked at a bunch of the hotels you mentioned, but got confused and ditched the whole thing. The Mark Twain was one of the ones I looked at b/c the rate was good, so I really appreciate the heads up on that one. I've never been to hotelres.com, but when I am done here I'll check it out.
