Red Rock Canyon outside of Vegas Hike

Does anyone have a reccomendation of a 1-2hour hike in Red Rock Canyon area outside of Vegas. We are driving on to Death Valley afterwards. Thought we might hit one trial in Red Rock if it was worth it. I have been on their website and couldn't make my mind up. I am still trying to decide if the longer scenic route to DV is that much better than the shorter route.

Are you coming back to Vegas after DV, or heading elsewhere, and what's your timetable?
My kids enjoyed crawling around Red Rock.

Considering the traffic volume on I-15 if that is your short way, I'd take the longer route via Pahrump. If you want still longer, go via Scotty's Castle, but avoid I-15 unless like you driving in traffic jams.

No we are not returning to Vegas. I just thought we would go thru Red Rock on the way. Looking for infor on hiking in Red Rock. I have read their website, but would like some imput from fodorites. If it isn't worth my time, I'll just drive thru it and not worry about a hike.

I know you're given a hiking map when you enter, perhaps you can call and see if you can have a map sent to you ahead of time.

I was just there a couple of weeks ago. We did the Calico Reservoir hike. I think it was very good, and took about 3 hrs, but you can cut it off. be sure and get there early. It does get crowded. I like this hike because you don't have to cross through open land to get to the canyon area, which is what makes it nice. If you make it to the end, you are rewarded with a view of Vegas in the distance. Stop at the visitors center for more info or other ideas, but I think this one will be a good choice.
